"Perhaps one of the most beautiful models from the late 1940s/early 1950s, featuring a long, sweeping roofline in the updated 1949 coupé design. The front end, with its characteristic waterfall grille, was the signature feature behind the nickname “dollar grin.”

This example is equipped with the classic combination of the Fireball 8 engine and Dynaflow Drive. The condition of this impressive automobile is excellent, and it is a true pleasure both to admire and to drive."

Description

This car was imported to Sweden from the United States in 1992 and registered for road use in August 1995. The most recent owner acquired it at that time and has, in practice, been its only user in Sweden.

During his ownership, the car was frequently seen at excursions, events, and enthusiast rallies. He was a dedicated automotive enthusiast with several classic vehicles in his garage and an active member of several clubs. His vehicles were always kept in excellent order, and all of them are thoroughly documented.

A booklet containing extensive notes on servicing, repairs, and driving history is included. The car also comes with Buick literature, receipts, inspection reports, etc., as well as a few boxes of useful spare parts.

Inspected and ready to drive.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Starts easily with a press of the accelerator pedal, then runs almost silently and without vibrations. During a short test drive on smaller roads, everything appeared to function well in terms of steering, automatic transmission, and brakes. The drive was calm and comfortable.

There was a small amount of hydraulic oil on the floor, so the car should be inspected and serviced, which is recommended as it has been driven only sparingly recently.

The vehicle was not inspected on a lift, but it was possible to look underneath reasonably well, and the vital components appeared to be in good condition.

  • Interior condition

Beautiful interior in two-tone, corduroy-like upholstery, offering excellent comfort. The door panels, trim, headliner and carpets are all in fine condition. The steering wheel, controls, dashboard and instruments are well preserved, with a light and attractive patina from use. All electrical functions appear to work properly. The radio is not operational, but is likely period-correct. Protective floor mats included.

  • Exterior condition

A nice, glossy paint finish with a few blisters. It is unclear when the vehicle was repainted. The glass, chrome, trim, emblems, and lighting details are all in very good condition, with the chrome deserving special praise. The wheels, hubcaps, and tyres are also in very good condition. The engine bay and luggage compartment are maintained to the same standard. The engine is aesthetically pleasing.

  • General condition

Like all the vehicles that have shared space in the owner’s garage, this car is beautifully maintained and in excellent condition. These fastback models are historically significant from an automotive perspective and reflect the spirit of the post-war era, when the automotive industry and society’s economic growth were running at full speed. It is a distinctive classic and enthusiast vehicle that recalls the era of the American Dream, when anything seemed possible.

Facts about the model

Buick began manufacturing as early as 1899 and is therefore one of the oldest surviving automobile manufacturers. When General Motors was formed in 1908, Buick was one of the brands within the group and was positioned just below GM’s prestige marque, Cadillac.

In 1931, Buick introduced its straight-eight engine, which was fitted to a number of different models throughout the 1930s. As American industry increasingly shifted to military production after the United States entered the Second World War following Pearl Harbor, Buick ceased automobile production in 1942. After the war ended in 1945, Buick resumed car production. It subsequently introduced, among other things, the Dynaflow Drive automatic transmission in 1948 and the iconic VentiPorts—porthole-style openings in the front fenders—in 1949.

The Buick Sedanette is regarded as one of the brand’s iconic models thanks to its fastback design. Introduced as early as 1941, it enjoyed its golden age after the war in Super and Roadmaster form, most often equipped with the Fireball 8 engine. When sedan hardtop versions were introduced, interest in these elegantly styled two-door coupés—with their gently tapering rooflines extending all the way to the end of the trunk—began to decline. That marked the end of the era—for the time being. The fastback design has made occasional comebacks over the years, although that is an entirely different story.

For 1949, the Sedanette was updated with cleaner, more modern lines. It became lower and wider, and, despite receiving a shorter wheelbase on GM’s new C-body platform, it offered more interior space. The Dynaflow transmission also became increasingly common. The windshield was enlarged and featured a two-piece curved design. The car also received the famous fender ports, with three on the Super Sedanette. The grille became wider and more aggressive, while the taillights were moved up onto the fenders, among other changes. A total of 65,395 Super Sedanettes were produced that year.
