"French engineering with Italian design in appealing working condition."

Description

Pininfarina–designed and with a relaxed character, this little twoseater cabriolet is an absolute joy— a charming, cheerful 1970 Peugeot 304 Cabriolet with only five previous owners in Sweden. It was first imported from France in 1975 and has remained here ever since. During its first 30 years it was driven around Östermalm; since then it’s been based in Hallstahammar and Sollentuna. The current owner has had it since 2023, intending to care for it and use it at car meets and for short local drives. Due to limited time and space, those plans have changed.

The odometer reads just 50,000 km, so it may have circled once around the clock—but the car still feels in better condition than one showing 150,000 km. It comes with repair and workshop manuals (no service book) and two sets of keys—though the luggagecompartment key is missing. The owner changed the combined engine-andgearbox oil (à la BMC) and filter in 2024. A pleasant and rather uncommon convertible on today’s roads. Inspected and approved at the vehicle inspection station, and ready to drive.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The engine and drivetrain run smoothly. The front brakes need attention, as they’re dragging slightly. Replacement of the rear shock absorbers is recommended—they’re about as effective as a bicycle pump. The radio does not work, and the turn-signal indicator in the instrument cluster is inoperative.

  • Interior condition:

The interior is in somewhat worn but functional condition. There are a few cracks and holes in the seat upholstery, and the passenger seat’s backrest is included separately—see photos.

  • Exterior condition:

An older repaint in normal used condition, showing its age. The soft top has a few small holes (see photo), but is otherwise in acceptable working order. One hinge-lock pin is missing on the right side of the soft top, although it can still be secured.

  • General condition:

An uncommon and delightful French open-top car in usable condition, with a few minor fixes needed. Inspected and approved at the vehicle inspection station.

Facts about the model

Over the years, Peugeot has shown good taste by creating jaunty little open-top versions of many of its models. The 304 was a modern car for its time and was offered as a sedan, estate, coupé, and cabriolet. This particular example arrived in Sweden from France in the mid-1970s.
