Description

This Mercedes was originally sold new by Philipsons in Uddevalla and received Tectyl rust protection in 1973, which has helped preserve it in excellent condition.
The car has been in the same family since it was purchased in 1973. Elver Blom owned the car from 1973 to 2005, after which his wife Anna-Lisa Blom took over ownership until 2011. It was then passed on to their daughter and current owner, Agneta.

Elver Blom grew up in a large family with ten siblings—he was the eleventh child, which is why he was named Elver. Growing up with so many siblings and limited resources, he later suffered a serious illness and was forced into early retirement. However, he fought back and developed a strong drive, which led him to start a mechanical workshop.

After focusing heavily on his business and working diligently, he managed to make it successful enough to buy a Mercedes. As a Mercedes enthusiast, this was a major moment for him—and a very proud and happy Elver drove onto the family farm with his new Mercedes 280 C to show it off.

Elver cared for his Mercedes with remarkable dedication. He never drove it in the rain, and if the weather turned while he was out, he would head straight home to carefully dry the car with a chamois cloth in his heated garage. His brother-in-law, a skilled mechanic, helped ensure the car was always in top mechanical condition.

When Elver’s wife, Anna-Lisa, took over the car, she continued to maintain it with the same level of care. She rarely drove it, and when she did, it was only for short trips around the local area.

In recent years, the car has been under the stewardship of their daughter, Agneta, though it was primarily her brother who drove it to local cruising events and classic car meets. There, it was always a crowd-pleaser—often greeted with smiles, thumbs-up, and comments like, “What a lovely Mercedes!”

The odometer shows just 104,857 km from new.

After a short test drive, I asked Agneta if she had ever driven the car herself. After a brief pause, she decided to take the wheel for the very first time—until then, her brother had always been the one behind the wheel (see photo: “first-time driver”).

Despite its limited use, the car has received proper attention in recent years, including a new exhaust system, brake system review, new rear caliper, brake lines and pads, and a new water pump.

It would be incredibly hard to find a better example—combining exceptional originality, low mileage, and nearly five decades of continuous family ownership.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The car starts instantly with a smooth-running engine. The automatic gearbox shifts effortlessly, the steering feels balanced, and the brakes perform well, offering confident road handling. The engine bay is clean and tidy, though there is slight dampness around the head gasket—a common sign in cars that haven't been driven regularly, and something worth reviewing.

The boot area is exceptionally clean—almost like new—and includes the original toolkit and spare wheel. All wheels are in excellent condition and fitted with good, older tires. The car is inspection-exempt and ready to be driven home.

  • Interior condition:

Interior is completely original and in excellent, undamaged condition. The seats and door cards feature a classic combination of vinyl and textile, all in great shape. There’s a small stain on the rear seat that could likely be removed with a proper upholstery cleaning. The door panels, carpets, mats, and headliner are all in very good condition. The dashboard is entirely original and undamaged—still looking nearly new—and all gauges, instruments, and even the original radio are fully functional.

  • Exterior condition:

The bodywork is rust-free with straight panels and no visible damage, complemented by an exceptionally clean, rust-free underbody. A new stainless steel exhaust system has also been recently installed. The car received a repair to the front wing in the 1980s due to a minor parking dent, after which it was repainted. Aside from that, the paintwork remains original and is in outstanding condition. The only noted blemish is a fine scratch on the passenger door (see photo). All chrome trim around the car is bright, clean, and well preserved.

  • General condition:

This car has clearly led a cherished life, with careful long-term ownership and exceptional preservation. It’s a beauty to admire—and even better with the window rolled down and the road ahead. Any Mercedes enthusiast would be proud to own and enjoy a car like this.
