Description

This elegant pagoda was fully restored by a renowned Mercedes enthusiast in Skellefteå who has since passed away. (His résumé included restorations for Helge Karinen, who founded the car museum at Sparreholm Castle.)
The Pagoda was acquired in 1996 and restored over several years. Among many other works, it received new leather upholstery and a new soft top. The restoration was completed in 2016, and the car passed inspection that same year. It still looks immaculate—which isn’t surprising, given that it’s been stored in a garage ever since and has covered only 1,000 km (approximately 10 miles) since 2016.

The odometer now reads 72,390 km, but because it was imported more recently, we cannot guarantee the total distance traveled since new. What we do know is that it has run just under 1,000 km since its restoration. The most recent inspection took place on 6 September 2018, and under current regulations the car remains approved indefinitely.

The heirs are selling the car now, as they do not share the late owner’s passionate interest in automobiles.

This is a distance auction. All photographs and technical details have been provided by the owner; BWA has not inspected the car in person.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The car has been off the road since 2019 and has barely been driven. The engine’s injection pump was rebuilt by the late owner but needs proper calibration; the engine runs a bit unevenly and leaks some oil when it warms up.

  • Interior condition:

New interior was fitted during the restoration. The steering wheel is a more modern style than the original but suits the car nicely. The gear lever needs attention—the bushing that supports the lever must be replaced. You can test-drive it as long as you hold the gear lever up. It’s a relatively simple repair that the buyer will need to arrange.

  • Exterior condition:

Painted during the restoration, and the paint remains in excellent condition—though a small blemish may have appeared in storage. It’s fitted with genuine steel-spoke wheels, commonly known as wire wheels.

  • General condition:

A very fine Pagoda, restored to good condition by an enthusiast and subsequently sparingly driven. There are just a few minor notes.

Facts about the model

Mercedes introduced the new 230 SL at the 1963 Geneva International Motor Show. The car was produced between 1963 and 1971, during which Mercedes built 48,912 examples of the Pagoda. Of these, 19,440 were shipped to the USA.

But what’s a “Pagoda,” anyway? The name is said to come from the shape of the hardtop: an imaginative observer thought the roof resembled a Japanese pagoda—those tiered structures often featuring distinctive upturned eaves.
