Description

The story of a Swedish Model A with a wooden body—a “woodie”—is long and fascinating. Part of it is recounted in a text found among the car’s documents, which can be read further down under “Model Facts,” and also appears in one of the photo captions.

The car currently has no valid registration, but obtaining an approved origin inspection and thus a registration inspection is entirely possible with all the older documents and registration papers available. Despite lacking formal identity papers, the owner has somewhat opportunistically driven the car to several meets in western Skåne over the years.

Included with the car is a trailer built from a motorcycle pivot trailer—a not uncommon setup for motorcycles needing a trailer in tow.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

In good working order and essentially road-ready, except for missing keys and the car lacking a valid identity. The engine has not been started by BWA, but the car rolls easily and the engine turns over. It was driven a few years ago and has since been kept in a museum. Purchasing a new ignition lock is no problem, and there are plenty of spare parts available for both Model T and Model A Fords.

  • Interior condition:

Beautiful wooden interior with intact and clean vinyl seats, and rear benches crafted from carved wood. The instruments and details also maintain the same high standard.

  • Exterior condition:

The woodworking on the body shows its age but is executed with exceptional craftsmanship and quality, as is the restoration of the structure. The front part of the car features a beautiful black paint finish.

  • General condition:

The body was solidly and sturdily built by the woodworking and saddlery factory mentioned in the history, back in the 1940s—much stronger than those built in the USA. The current owner has refined the entire car with a new chassis and all the details on the wooden body. A truly fine Model A Woodie with a taxi-like feel, even though it has never been used in that service.

Facts about the model

About 20 years ago, Model A enthusiast Jan-Olle Olsson from Höör wrote this about the car:

“This Model A is currently being rebuilt by one of our members in the town of Landskrona. Its history is largely known. A paint dealer in Malmö became a co-owner of a small woodworking and coachbuilding business in Gustavsberg outside Stockholm sometime in the early 1940s. During the war, there wasn’t much work at the factory. To keep the two employees occupied, the idea arose to build a car body that could be used both as a passenger and a delivery vehicle—a forerunner to the Volvo Duett!

They got a suitable chassis to build on since the paint dealer in Malmö had a 1931 Model A pickup. It was brought up to the factory, the existing body removed, and construction and manufacturing of the new body commenced. The result was shown to several local officials in hopes of gaining municipal funding for continued production, but the proposal was rejected. The officials were not interested in investing public funds in what they considered a risky project. The paint dealer was upset and took the Model A back to his garage in Lomma outside Malmö, locked the garage door, and continued running his two paint and wallpaper stores.

In 1964, he offered the car to two gentlemen, H. Blom and B. Karlsson, who had begun working with vintage vehicles, and they purchased it. Included in the sale was a document where the seller guaranteed the engine was free from knocks or rattles. The car stayed in their garage at the coachbuilder’s workshop until 1975, when it was sold to a person from Norrland and transported by trailer to Piteå, ending up with the owner of a Uno-X gas station.

Since I had seen the car during a visit to the coachbuilder’s workshop and also tipped off the buyer from Norrland about it, I became interested in the mid-1990s in locating the Model A as it hadn’t appeared in veteran circles for some time. A notice in the Swedish Model A club’s magazine resulted in a phone call from someone living in Vaxholm who then owned the car. He had bought it from a car dealer in Gävle a year or so earlier and planned to use the chassis for a hot rod project but was willing to sell the body since he had no use for it.

Now, our member has purchased both the body and a new chassis, and soon a Model A Woodie will be restored—finer than ever before.”
