"A lovely 444 that has now been given new life. It remains in original condition with period-correct accessories. As I see it, this is a light restoration project that mainly calls for a few hours with a polishing machine. It’s likely that the shine of the original paint can still be brought back."

Description

The history of this vehicle can only be traced back to 2003, when it ended up in Sala Municipality. Its final inspection—for all future exemption—was completed in August 2017 at 51,620 kilometers. This mileage could be accurate, but it cannot be guaranteed. Since then, the car has only been driven a few kilometers and has been stored in a warm and dry environment.

The car has recently undergone a startup restoration, including a basic valve adjustment. A fine-tuning is recommended, but the engine runs very smoothly and evenly. The same goes for the gearbox and brakes. The car feels solid and stable on the road, and all functions are in working order.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Mechanically, the car feels very solid. After being filled with fresh fuel, it starts up and the engine runs smoothly. All technical functions appear to be working satisfactorily. The driver’s side window is taped up, and it's unclear what repairs may be needed. Only one key is available for the car.

  • Interior condition:

The interior of the car is in very good condition. The seat surfaces could not be inspected during the test, as they were covered by a very tight, custom-fitted seat cover. Photos of the original upholstery may be available during the auction period. The dashboard and instruments are in nice condition, and the door panels and headliner are in good, usable shape. The original carpet is intact but somewhat faded. A simple interior detailing would further enhance the overall impression.

  • Exterior condition:

From what we’ve been able to observe, the car is essentially rust-free. There are minor scratches and stone chips. We see no signs that the car has been repainted. The paintwork will require a time-consuming but rewarding effort—the beautiful maroon-red finish is very dull, but in our assessment, it can be restored. A fun project that will likely yield a great result. Chrome, glass, and trim are in good, usable condition. The tires are old but have good tread.

  • General condition:

A solid project with strong mechanicals and interior condition. With polishing and some detailing, the car's appearance will be elevated by several levels.

Facts about the model

The Volvo PV 444 was introduced in 1944 as a compact car and quickly gained popularity for its reliability and style. The 1953 model was part of the second generation of the PV 444 and featured a more modern design along with improved technical specifications.

In the early 1950s, Volvo had successfully established itself on the international market, and the PV 444 played a key role in building the company’s reputation. The car offered a combination of comfort, safety, and performance, making it appealing to both families and younger drivers.

The Volvo PV 444 was also one of the first cars to use a monocoque construction, which enhanced safety and structural rigidity. It was powered by a 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine, providing enough power for both city driving and longer journeys.

Production of the PV 444 continued until 1965, and it became a symbol of Swedish engineering excellence. In total, over 440,000 units were produced, making it one of the most successful Volvo models of all time.
