"Some collect model cars, others classic passenger vehicles—and a small but passionate group collects emergency vehicles. Here’s a classic fire truck. It’s a powerful feeling to climb up into the cab and explore the vehicle. This is solid machinery that showcases what Swedish automotive engineering was capable of in the 1960s. This particular one is also a fully functional vehicle in an impressively usable condition."

Description

This truck was registered for road use on August 10, 1961. According to records, it began its service as a delivery truck for Vårby Breweries. It was later converted into a tanker truck for the Enköping-Håbo Fire and Rescue Service. When it was decommissioned in 2008, it was reportedly the oldest active fire service vehicle in Sweden. The sirens and blue lights are in good working order. The old red lights remain but have been disconnected.

The current owner—a firefighter, bus and truck driver with a passion for large vintage vehicles—has owned it since August 26, 2022. It is now being sold to make room for other projects.

Tax- and inspection-exempt, and ready to drive once registered.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Started easily and ran reliably in both engine and drivetrain. While the undersigned did not drive it personally, as a passenger on a short trip, it appeared to perform well. The seller had driven the truck in regular rush hour traffic from Ingarö to Bromma and back without any issues—at that point, the odometer rolled over to 19,000 km. What could be seen underneath looked solid, with some patina.

  • Interior condition:

The interior of the Be-GE cab is rustic but functional, with most components working as they should. It features appropriate service equipment for a rescue vehicle of its time. The right-hand door was jammed at the time of photography.

  • Exterior condition:

The body and other components are in a patinated but functional condition. Decals and emblems are in good shape. There is rust damage (holes) at the lower rear edge of the front fenders. One rear mudflap is missing. The pump’s functionality is uncertain but it appears complete. At the time of photography, the hoses were not present, but they are with the owner and will be included in the sale.

  • General condition:

This rig might not quite fit on a typical suburban driveway, but for those with a passion for heavy emergency vehicles, this Scania L55—with its history—is both interesting and exciting.

Facts about the model

The Scania-Vabis L55 and L56 are a series of trucks produced between 1959 and 1968. They played a key role in building Sweden’s welfare society and were used for a variety of purposes.

The L55 was introduced in the summer of 1959 as a smaller version of the L75, which had debuted the previous spring. It featured a new six-cylinder engine based on the L75's design, but in a smaller 7,167 cm³ version producing 120 hp. If equipped with a tandem rear axle (bogie), it was designated LS55. The cab was also similar to the one used in the L75.

In the fall of 1962, the L55 was succeeded by the L56/LS56, which among other upgrades featured a larger 7,790 cm³ engine producing 140 hp. A total of 18,416 units were produced, including the special L66 model, which was commonly exported. The L66 was a hybrid between the L75 and the L55/56. All of these models were eventually replaced by the L80 series as the 1960s drew to a close.
