"A superb Saab Viggen that performs flawlessly and is an absolute pleasure to drive. It presents exceptionally well, both inside and out, leaving an outstanding overall impression."

Description

The current owner purchased this car from a well-known Saab enthusiast in 2023. By that time, the previous owner had expertly restored the car in 2016 and had only used it sparingly thereafter (see the owner's account). Since acquiring the car, the current owner has driven it exclusively during the summer months and has ensured it receives regular maintenance.

Owner's comment

Now offered is a 1999 Saab 9-3 Viggen Coupé—one of the most desirable modern Saabs and a model that has firmly established itself as a sought-after collector's car. Having covered approximately 188,000 kilometres (117,000 miles), this is an exceptionally well-preserved example with only a small number of previous owners. What truly sets this car apart is its originality. It remains completely factory specification, having never been tuned or modified. The engine, drivetrain, and overall character have been preserved exactly as Saab intended. A few years ago, the car underwent an extensive body and paint restoration. Prior to repainting, the front and rear sections, bumpers, side skirts, lights, and other exterior components were carefully removed to ensure the highest possible standard of finish. The bodywork, preparation, painting, and reassembly are thoroughly documented with a comprehensive photographic record covering every stage of the restoration. Finished in the iconic Lightning Blue—the signature colour of the Viggen—the car presents exceptionally well. The bumpers, side skirts, and all detachable body panels were painted separately to achieve an outstanding finish throughout. All equipment is fully functional, and the car is ready to be driven and enjoyed. A substantial portfolio documenting the restoration accompanies the vehicle and will be made available to serious prospective buyers. This represents a rare opportunity to acquire an unusually original, meticulously restored, and exceptionally well-documented Saab 9-3 Viggen.

Facts about the model

Introduced in 1999, the Saab 9-3 Viggen was an even more potent version of the already high-performance 9-3 2.0T (200 hp). Named after the iconic Saab 37 Viggen fighter aircraft, it became the ultimate performance model in the 9-3 range.

Power came from the 2.3-litre turbocharged engine shared with the Saab 9-5 Aero, producing 225 horsepower at launch. For the 2000 model year, output was increased to 230 horsepower.

Compared with the later 9-3 Aero (introduced in 2000), the Viggen featured a number of performance upgrades, including a stronger clutch, firmer dampers, revised springs, and several distinctive styling enhancements such as its unique rear spoiler.

The Viggen was offered in six factory colours: Lightning Blue, Monte Carlo Yellow, Steel Grey, Silver, Black, and Laser Red.

A total of approximately 4,600 Saab 9-3 Viggens were produced between 1999 and 2002, making it one of the rarest and most collectible modern Saabs.
