MG MGB 1800 Roadster — 1964

A fine MGB with only five previous owners. The underside has been repaired with welding work and subsequently received partial repainting. Following a recent recommissioning service, the car is ready for the road once again, having seen very limited use during the current owner's stewardship.

"A fine MGB with all the mechanical fundamentals in place. A thorough detailing and cosmetic refresh would significantly enhance the overall presentation and allow the car to truly shine."

Description

A fine Swedish-supplied MGB with only five owners from new. While the odometer displays a low mileage, our assessment is that it has likely completed one full revolution. The current owner acquired the car in August 2011 and has since used it sparingly for occasional summer drives.

The vehicle was last inspected in 2016 at an indicated mileage of 15,230 km. Under current Swedish regulations, this inspection remains valid indefinitely. The underside has not been inspected by us, as no lift was available at the time of assessment. A substantial file of documentation accompanies the car, providing valuable insight into its history and maintenance.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Everything appears to be functioning as intended to the best of our assessment. The engine starts readily, and the gearbox operates smoothly with easy gear changes. Producing 96 horsepower, the engine feels lively and responsive, thanks in large part to the car’s low weight of just over 1,000 kilograms.

  • Interior condition

Minor signs of wear are visible, but the leather upholstery remains intact and attractively patinated. The seats feel somewhat worn, particularly the driver's seat. The door panels and carpets are in good condition, although they would benefit from some cleaning and detailing. The door seals appear relatively new and are in good overall condition.

  • Exterior condition

The paintwork presents well, with a deep and glossy finish. There are some signs of light surface rust beginning to appear around the wheel arch seams. The glass, lighting units, trim, and bumpers are all in good driver-quality condition. The tyres are older and show some age-related cracking (dry rot). Both the soft top and cockpit cover are in good usable condition.

  • General condition

A car that presents very well overall, with only modest potential for improvement through a thorough detailing and cosmetic refresh. We would recommend replacing the tyres, as they are of an older age and exhibit a degree of cracking commonly associated with dry rot.

Facts about the model

The MG MGB was introduced in 1962 as the successor to the MGA and quickly became a major sales success. The 1964 model year is particularly sought after by enthusiasts, as it represents the early and purest version of the roadster.

During this year, development began on the forthcoming MGB GT model in collaboration with Pininfarina, while the engine was upgraded with a more durable five-bearing crankshaft. Power came from a 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine producing 95 horsepower, paired with a four-speed manual gearbox and capable of a top speed of approximately 170 km/h (106 mph).

The 1964 model year was also the last to feature the distinctive “pull-handle” door handles, often referred to by enthusiasts as “refrigerator handles.” With its monocoque construction and sporty driving characteristics, the MGB went on to become one of the world’s most widely produced sports cars, with more than half a million examples built before production ended in 1980.
