"A premium saloon offering excellent comfort and the luxury features of its era, including power windows all around, the original factory radio, and, perhaps most notably, a four-speed automatic transmission for quiet and effortless cruising.

At the time of photography, the car was covered with a light layer of storage dust, which was intentionally left untouched. Rather than brushing it off and risking scratches, it should be removed with water and a proper wash to protect the paintwork.

The car has seen only limited use in recent years but has reportedly been serviced regularly throughout its life."

Description

This Bentley was first registered on 3 September 1962 and supplied new by Jack Barclay Ltd of Mayfair, London, one of Britain's most renowned Bentley and Rolls-Royce dealers.

Its current owner, a Swede living and working in London at the time, had long been searching for a Bentley S2. Through a colleague whose father owned a Bentley and Rolls-Royce dealership, he was introduced to this particular car and purchased it in May 1977. Having had only a handful of previous owners and been well cared for, it proved to be exactly the example he had been looking for.

The Bentley served both as the family's everyday car and as an enthusiast's vehicle. Around the same time, a Morris Minor 1000 Open Tourer also joined the garage. The Bentley was used extensively to explore the British countryside, with countless journeys made throughout the United Kingdom to experience its landscapes, history, and cultural landmarks. During its years in Britain, the car was maintained regularly by both Jack Barclay Ltd and Mascot Motors.

In the early 1980s, the original front wings were replaced with new factory panels after the first signs of corrosion appeared. During the mid-1990s, the owner returned to Stockholm, and naturally, the Bentley accompanied him. It was registered in Sweden on 23 October 1995 and approved for Swedish road use on 22 December of the same year.

Since arriving in Sweden, the Bentley has been reserved for special occasions and enthusiast driving. It has served as a wedding car for family members and close friends and once again shared garage space with a Morris Minor 1000 Open Tourer. The owner joined both the Swedish Historic Vehicle Association (AHK) and the Rolls-Royce & Bentley section, while the car has long been insured through the Swedish Historic Vehicle Federation (MHRF).

Maintenance continued to be carried out meticulously, initially by PIKAB and later by its founder, Torbjörn Hansson. The most recent service was completed last autumn by Uno Motors in Stockholm.

Six years ago, the car was professionally repainted in its original colour scheme. During the restoration, while the interior, windscreen, and other components had been removed, an unfortunate fire broke out in the building where these parts were being stored. Through the insurance company, a correct and well-preserved replacement interior, together with a replacement windscreen, was sourced from the United States. This explains the decal on the windscreen—the car itself has never been in the United States.

After 49 years of devoted ownership, the time has now come for a new custodian to take over this distinguished Bentley. The sale includes a collection of literature, documentation, and, perhaps most importantly, all the charm and presence expected of a true British luxury motor car. The car is fully roadworthy, inspected, and ready to be enjoyed.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The engine starts easily and runs smoothly and quietly. The car was test-driven on a short route along local roads, where it performed exactly as expected. It offers a refined and comfortable driving experience, with light power-assisted steering, a smooth-shifting four-speed automatic transmission, and effective brakes.

The car has not been inspected on a lift, but the underside appears to be in very good condition based on a visual inspection.

  • Interior condition

The interior is beautifully preserved in its original specification for the model, offering excellent comfort from its armchairs and seats. The door cards, interior panels, door sills, and wood trim are all well preserved with an attractive light patina. The headlining and carpets are also in excellent condition.

The steering wheel, controls, dashboard, instruments, and luxury features—including the interior lighting, mirrors, and picnic tables—are all in fine, well-preserved condition. All gauges and electrical functions operate correctly.

The only departure from the original specification is the speedometer, which was replaced with a Rolls-Royce-style kilometre-per-hour unit when the car was imported to Sweden. The original Bentley miles-per-hour speedometer is included with the car. The original factory radio is not currently operational.

  • Exterior condition

Finished in the elegant original colour combination of Sage Green and Smoke Green, the car was professionally repainted six years ago and remains in excellent condition. The chrome work, bright trim, badges, lighting assemblies, and glass are all well preserved, displaying only a light and attractive patina consistent with careful use.

The wheels are in fine condition, complete with chrome trim rings and hubcaps, and are fitted with good tyres of unknown age. Both the engine bay and luggage compartment retain their well-preserved original appearance. The original tool kit is also included.

  • General condition

A magnificent British motor car embodying all the hallmarks of the 1950s and 1960s: elegant two-tone paintwork, an abundance of chrome, a stately grille, large wheels, a luxurious leather-and-wood interior, and a powerful V8 engine paired with a smooth four-speed automatic transmission. Backed by a solid ownership history, it is a car in which everything functions as it should.

This imposing Bentley has been a highly desirable classic and collector's car from the very beginning. Equally at home at a picnic during the Glyndebourne Festival, as an elegant wedding car, or simply gliding through the countryside in refined comfort, it offers timeless style, prestige, and effortless motoring.

Facts about the model

The Bentley S-Series was produced between 1955 and 1965 and shared much of its styling and engineering with the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud.

The S1, built from 1955 to 1959, was powered by a 4,887 cc inline six-cylinder engine. The S2 and S3 models were fitted with Bentley's all-aluminium 6,230 cc V8 engine. The S2 was produced from late 1959 until 1962, while the S3 remained in production from late 1962 to 1965.

The most obvious visual distinction of the S3 was its twin headlamps. Other changes included a slightly lower radiator grille to create a lower bonnet line, along with subtle revisions to the bumpers and overriders.

The S-Series was offered as a four-door saloon, two-door coupé, and convertible. Bentley also supplied rolling chassis to a number of renowned coachbuilders, who produced bespoke bodies to individual customer specifications. From 1958 onwards, a four-speed automatic transmission became available as an optional extra.

The S-Series was ultimately succeeded by the Bentley T1, the sister model to the Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow, marking the company's transition to a more modern unitary-construction design.
