"It was with the models Audi 60, 75, 80, and 90 Super—built on the F103 platform under Volkswagen’s leadership—that DKW was able to shed its outdated two-stroke engine and begin the transformation into the premium brand Audi.

If you're looking for a significant yet overlooked milestone in Audi's history, this is the right car."

Description

Extremely rare Audi model in Sweden.

According to CarInfo, only nine Audi 60 Variant vehicles from 1968 to 1972 are currently registered in Sweden.

This Variant—or “herrgårdsvagn” as estate cars were once called in Sweden—has had four owners since new. The current owner purchased the car in 1989 while living in the Stockholm area. He needed a summer car to use when visiting relatives in Umeå. He bought the car in 1989 and drove it up to the family farm. A local mechanic had promised to fix a few issues—a rusty exhaust system and a loose wheel bearing—but nothing was done, and the car has been sitting in a barn ever since (see photos).

The owner rolled the car out this spring and fitted the winter wheels, as the summer tires had gone flat. The odometer shows 67,400 km, though it's unclear if that is accurate—it could also be 167,400 km.

The owner now hopes someone will take over this rare vehicle and return it to the road. Included with the car are the owner’s manual, four summer wheels with damaged tires, the original toolkit and jack, and the factory roof rack.

This is a remote auction. All photos and information about the car and its technical condition have been provided by the owner. BWA has not inspected the car in person.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Equipped with a straight four-cylinder 1.5-liter engine producing 55 horsepower. (The engine was originally developed by Mercedes under the designation M118.) Front-wheel drive with a four-speed manual gearbox.

The car was driven into the barn under its own power in 1989. The owner has not attempted to start it in many years, so the current technical condition is unknown—we don't even know if the engine turns over.

The car was stored in 1989 awaiting a replacement of the right front wheel bearing, which was loose. The exhaust system was also due for replacement and has therefore been removed.

  • Interior condition:

The interior has held up remarkably well. The headliner is intact, and the seats are also in good condition. The very fact that the original rubber mat in the cargo area is still present is rare, even though the rubber has become a bit dry.

  • Exterior condition:

We believe the paint is original from 1972, with some touch-ups. Visible rust can be seen on the rear sills and the lower edges of the front fenders. Still, the car appears to be in reasonably well-preserved condition. See the photos for more details. A nostalgic roof rack belonging to the car is included.

  • General condition:

A rare opportunity to find an Audi 60 Variant in need of restoration. Modest as it may seem, this car represents a true milestone in Audi’s development toward the models we see today.

Facts about the model

The Audi 60 was built on the F103 platform and served as the base model, offering 55 horsepower under the hood. It was closely followed by the slightly more upscale Audi 75 with 75 hp and the Audi Super 90 with 90 hp—models that could even challenge the performance of some of the smaller BMWs of the time.

The M118 engine, used between 1965 and 1972, was originally developed by Mercedes-Benz for the mass-market segment. It first appeared in the Audi F103 after Daimler AG sold the company to Volkswagen. This engine replaced the earlier two-stroke units, featured a Solex carburetor, and employed a swirl effect in the intake ports that enabled smoother operation and improved efficiency.

Based on the four-cylinder OHV M118, Volkswagen engineers later developed a modified 2.0 SOHC version called the VW EA831. This engine went on to power the Audi 100 (C2, 1976–1982), the Volkswagen LT, and eventually the Porsche 924.
