"A car in a charming condition with delightful attributes such as a hood ornament, sun visor, fog lights, reverse light, lion’s paw, some chrome in the engine compartment, and wheels in a light custom style in red, with beauty rings and smooth hubcaps.

Together with the special taillights above the rear fenders, the vehicle becomes a delightful and mild variant of a Folkhem Rod. During the test drive, we were met with approval and waves; this car evokes emotions."

Description

Reportedly, this car has likely been on Gotland since new, where it stood and fell out of the register. In the early ’90s, it was re-registered and was reportedly still in relatively good original condition at that time. Exactly what has been done and not done during its 70-year history is unknown. The National Archives can probably provide ownership history, and those interested can likely obtain more information. The current owner acquired the car on Gotland in September 2020 and has barely driven it since. It has now been started up for sale. The carburetor has been repacked, the fuel pump and tank are new, and the fuel lines have been cleaned.

Instruction manual included.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The car started easily and ran smoothly in both the engine and drivetrain. The rest of the mechanics appear to be in good functional condition. Not inspected on a lift, but it looked good underneath from what could be inspected.

  • Interior condition:

The interior is in good condition, possibly original, with a used patina. Rubber mats are discolored and somewhat worn. The reupholstered headliner is in good condition. The lens for the interior light is missing. The steering wheel, instruments, and dashboard are in fine condition. Everything appears to be functional. Newer stereo.

  • Exterior condition:

Nice and shiny paint with light use patina. The chrome, glass, rubber, and lighting details are at the same level. Charming accessories such as a hood ornament, fog lights, sun visor, etc. Wheels with beauty rings and Baby Moons, as well as whitewall tires, are in good condition.

  • General condition:

This is a Swedish classic and a car from the folkhem era. Winding gravel roads and highways, fields and meadows, lakes, summer and winter, small villages and industrial towns, as well as cobblestone streets and residential areas in the big city, in all these environments, the PV 444 has been, and it is like a postcard on our retinas. This car, its history and condition, is a nostalgic rush and a delightful enthusiast and collector’s car.

Facts about the model

PV 444 is a classic Volvo that has had volumes written about it. It was premiered at Volvo’s exhibition in the Royal Tennis Hall on September 1, 1944. Many sensed that World War II would soon be over and Volvo wanted to be ready when peace came. However, it would take until early 1947 before cars could start being delivered. All sorts of obstacles and delays arose, not least due to a shortage of raw materials during and after the war. We have also read that Volvo sold the car at a loss initially, as many orders were placed at the introductory price set in 1944, which quickly proved to be too low. Nonetheless, the wheels began to turn, and the 444 hit our roads. Not only on our roads, but Volvo also got its new family car exported, primarily to neighboring countries but eventually also to Europe, the USA, and the rest of the world. A total of 196,005 units were produced before it was over. The new Amazon also began to be sold in 1957, and the following year the 444 was upgraded to model 544.

PV 444 H was manufactured from December 1954 to November 1955. It now got a whole and larger rear window, the special taillights on the side of the body, and the spare tire standing on the right side of the trunk. The early manufactured cars in black still had the gray interior paint, which became black towards the end. A total of 29,046 units of the H and HS versions were produced.
