"An older Halmstad motorcycle in a pleasant condition."

Description

Within the ‘98 group, the Rex Midget has always had a reputation as the sporty machine. It has never really been about impressive power, but rather about presence and character. The twin exhausts play the leading role in that image — perhaps they add a touch of extra speed, but above all they look exactly right on a machine that is actually called a Midget.

That the exhausts influence performance to some extent is ?????? possible, but the truth is that the speed can still feel greater than what seems reasonable for this type of motorcycle. This particular example has been measured at just under 70 km/h, which is on the fast side when you also consider the brakes and the lighting. The lights do work both front and rear, just as they should, but in practice a good flashlight provides better visibility in the dark.

Despite this, the Midget itself is a delight. It runs very well and is surprisingly easy to start. Once it is properly warmed up and you switch it off, a firm push by hand on the kick pedal is enough to start it again, and it immediately settles into idle and begins to chug calmly and pleasantly, as if it had never done anything else.

The Rex is in very good usable condition. The only clear deviation from the original specification is the saddle — and that is a deviation few would complain about. It is significantly more comfortable than the original and makes longer rides much more enjoyable. The machine is also inspected and approved all the way until the year 2099, for those who are wondering.

In recent years it has only been ridden a few kilometers per year, which means a light spring service may be appropriate before the summer outings. Lubricate the cables, clean the carburetor, and pump up the tires — the usual small rituals after winter — and then the Rex Midget is ready for the season.

Facts about the model

Rex was founded in 1896 as a bicycle manufacturer and from 1908 began selling motorcycles with imported engines. In 1923, the company focused on early lightweight motorcycles that had to weigh under 50 kilograms. These vehicles were exempt from driving licence requirements, insurance, and taxation until 1927, which contributed to their popularity. With a legislative change in 1931, lightweight machines with pedals were permitted, but the maximum weight was reduced to 45 kilograms, leading to compromises, among other things in braking performance. From 1940, the regulations were tightened, and the lightweight motorcycle was equated with a light motorcycle, with licence requirements and other obligations.
