"A usable classic that is well worth putting a bit of work into."

Description

älardalen region over the past nearly 30 years.

Inspected on 2025-10-30 without remarks at 176,321 km, and likewise two years earlier on 2023-10-26 without remarks at 167,954 km. Next inspection due no later than 2027-10-31. Tax-exempt from 2024.

After owning a Rover 2000 from 1975 and for the following 20 years, the current owner began looking for a newer vehicle. A tip came via a friend’s sister, who works for the UN, that she had a Land Rover Discovery V8i from 1994 for sale as part of her household relocation. The car had been purchased directly from Land Rover in England and driven during its first year in Sierra Leone, Africa. All the car’s windows are engraved with ‘UN23,’ indicating that it is a civilian UN vehicle. She had recently moved back to Sweden and the Discovery was registered here. A new UN assignment in Thailand in the mid-1990s meant that she decided to sell the car.

For the current owner, this was a real find, as he services most things himself. No catalytic converter and a low-compression V8i 3.9-liter engine. No ABS brakes or airbags, manual transmission, and just under 20,000 km on the odometer — the choice was easy.

The Discovery has been serviced regularly, and necessary repairs and maintenance have been carried out continuously. Worth mentioning is that between 2017 and 2025 the following were replaced: heater valve, new front brake splash shields, new heavy-duty fuel tank mount, new radiator hoses, new windshield and left headlight, new starter motor, new Boge rear shock absorbers, and new rear brake discs.

The car is fitted with 205/80 R16 Cooper Discoverer all-season tires on Rhino aluminum wheels. New front shock absorbers, an oil filter, distributor cap, and a set of used studded winter tires on original 16-inch steel wheels are included with the car. An extra set of keys is also included.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The engine and drivetrain run well. The braking systems also function as they should. The instrument illumination for the heater controls is not working.

  • Interior condition:

The interior as a whole is in used condition, with normal wear for the car’s age and mileage. The dashboard plastic has warped above the stereo, which is common on these cars. The headliner fabric has come loose in several places; see photos.

  • Exterior condition:

Worn paint with the clear coat peeling, mainly on the hood. Faded in several areas. There are a few dents in the body, and rust is present, mainly underneath; see photos.

  • General condition:

A usable Land Rover in a condition that appeals to someone who wants a practical vehicle without having to be overly careful with it. With a bit of work, it will become better.

Facts about the model

The Land Rover Discovery Series I was introduced in 1989 as a more family-oriented alternative to the classic Range Rover. The model combined strong off-road capability with improved comfort and a more practical body design. Technically, the Discovery was based on the Range Rover, with solid axles front and rear and permanent four-wheel drive with low range. Over the years, both four-cylinder diesel engines and petrol V8s were offered, with the 3.5- and later 3.9-liter V8 being particularly popular. The Discovery I was produced until 1998 and has today become a valued classic among enthusiasts thanks to its robust construction, excellent off-road performance, and characteristic 1990s design.
