"Here we have a genuine classic family car, now 60 years old, that requires an overhaul and some attention to get it started and back on the road again."

Description

This car was first registered for traffic on April 22, 1964. According to records, it has had seven owners. The most recent owner acquired it recently to sell it on behalf of a relative who had owned it since September 2009. During its last inspection in September 2022, it was issued a driving ban due to issues with the brakes, rust damage on the rear right control arm mounting, and high CO emissions.

Following this, work was started to address these issues, including installing new rear brake drums and cylinders, as well as a new master brake cylinder. Additionally, a new water pump was fitted. However, other matters intervened, and the car was left standing.

Included with the car are various original documents, Volvo literature, and a range of useful spare parts. A period-correct roof rack and a double set of keys are also included.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The car has not been started or driven in a couple of years. It has been stored under a tarp and could not be moved or driven at this time. It has not been inspected on a lift, but what could be observed appears to be in decent condition, though there are details that need attention.

  • Interior condition:

Nice and well-preserved interior in original condition. The front seats and rear bench are intact, featuring attractive fabric and vinyl upholstery. The door panels and headliner are in similarly good condition. The steering wheel, controls, and dashboard are also in excellent shape. The top of the dashboard shows "typical peeling and cracks," but remains presentable. Functions have not been tested. Includes a charming period-correct Philips car radio, though its functionality has not been verified. Equipped with three-point seat belts and good original rubber mats.

  • Exterior condition:

Older repaint, appearing to be in the original Pearl White color, in decent condition with normal wear for its age. There are touch-ups, small dents, scratches, and similar imperfections. Some areas should be inspected for rust, as signs are present. The glass, trim, moldings, emblems, and lighting components are also in good condition with age-appropriate wear. Features newer grille halves. The wheels, with hubcaps and beauty rings, show some wear, while the tires are in good condition, though their age is unknown. The engine and luggage compartments are well-preserved given the car’s age and mileage.

  • General condition:

This car is both charming and delightful, exuding a 1960s aura with its color combination and condition, as well as featuring interesting attributes. There is work to be done, but the starting point is solid. Volvo’s debut with an automatic transmission was well-received, even in an era when most preferred manual gearboxes. This makes this car a historically significant and classic vehicle in automotive history.

Facts about the model

Countless columns have been written about the Amazon, one of Sweden's most cherished classic cars.

Designed by Jan Wilsgaard with a touch of Italian influence, it was Volvo's take on the so-called ponton body style, a hallmark of the 1950s. Manufactured as model years 1957–1970, it made history in 1959 as the world’s first mass-produced car to feature three-point front seat belts as standard.

The bulletproof B18 engine, producing 75 hp, was introduced in the 1962 model year, along with the two-door version and the wagon. For the sportier driver, a 90 hp engine became available in the Sport versions.

Model year 1964 was the last to feature the grille, wheels, hubcaps, and interior with the classic 1950s aesthetic, with only minor changes introduced that year. Notably, the trunk handle and emblem received a redesign, hinting at the updates that would come with the 1965 models, which included significant modernizations and updates. Model year 1964 also marked the introduction of a three-speed automatic transmission with a column shifter.

By the time the 1970s arrived, the Amazon was retired after 14 model years and a total production of 667,332 units. Offered as two-, four-, or five-door versions, the range spanned from standard models to the Sport and GT versions. Truly a Swedish icon and a piece of automotive history.
