"A car that, with the right resources, can be improved further."

Description

Auctioned on behalf of an estate. Here we have a Saab that can truly be described as unique: a 1955 Saab 92B de Luxe that has had the same owner since it was purchased new in July 1955.

The owner, Ingrid, paid around 9,000–10,000 SEK for it at Philipsons’ car dealership in Stockholm. However, she was never particularly fond of the original dark red color. During a workshop visit, the staff accidentally damaged the hood, and as compensation they offered to repaint half of the car. She chose instead to add a small amount to have the entire car repainted in white.

During Ingrid’s ownership, the car was only driven in the summertime. She used it sparingly—usually just a trip to the countryside around Skånela or a short drive down to the village. The car and its history have been featured in the magazine Klassiker, written by Claes Johansson, as well as in Vi Bilägare.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The engine starts and runs, but there is no coolant as a freeze plug has rusted through—see photos. For this reason, the car was not test-driven for any longer distance. All of the car’s systems and auxiliary equipment should be inspected.

  • Interior condition:

Worn original interior. Some damage is present—see photos.

  • Exterior condition:

Looks good from a distance. Worn paint with some damage—see photos. Rust is present, mainly around the rear fender mounting points—see photos—but the rear shock absorber mounts are also affected by rust—see photos.

  • General condition:

A Saab 92 in a condition that should be regarded as a restoration project. A unique car, as it has had only one owner since new (until 2025).

Facts about the model

SAAB’s automobile operations came to life in 1947, and the first model—the Saab 92—borrowed several design elements from the company’s aviation division. As the 92 gradually evolved through various stages into the model 96, beginning with the 1960 model year, one could still see influences from the 1940s, even as the 96 carried the brand into the 1960s. When SAAB launched the new 99, and later the 900, many thought it would mean the end for the 96, but like the Phoenix, it continued to receive updates over the years and survived well into the 1980s.

As before, both major and minor changes were made regularly, so that by the time production finally ended, one could place an early 92 next to a model from the 1980s and see that not a single part was the same—yet the family resemblance was unmistakable.

Returning to the 1950s: when the first model year of the 92 was finally released as the 1950 model—after years of testing and its premiere on June 10, 1947—the waiting list was long. Production was slow in the beginning; only 1,246 cars were built the first year. During the early years, the cars were bottle green and available in the De Luxe trim.

For the 1953 model year, the first major changes arrived: the rear window was enlarged, the fuel tank was moved, and the car now received a trunk lid. The luggage compartment was also made larger when the battery was moved to the engine bay. With a removable rear seat, owners could now use the 92 as a small transport vehicle, and Saab even offered a dedicated insert box for this purpose. The seats were also updated. Internally, the car was now referred to as the 92B.

For the 1954 model year, a number of upgrades were introduced, and the model was now officially called the 92B. A new carburetor (Solex 32 BI) and a new ignition coil increased power from 25 to 28 hp. The paint became synthetic, and decorative trim strips were added to the fenders. The wheels received ventilation holes, and the doors were equipped with plexiglass draft guards. New Hella headlights with integrated parking lights replaced the small lamps between the headlights, grille, and fenders. The instrumentation and interior details were also updated.

The color range now included grey, blue-grey, green, maroon, and black. On March 6, the 10,000th Saab rolled out of the factory. By summer, buyers could also order their 92 with a fabric sunroof.

The last 92s were produced in 1956, by which time its successor, the model 93, had already begun its era. A total of 34,956 examples of the model 92 were built, of which 14,828 were the B-version.
