Description
Clothing merchant Klingner owned the Rekord all the way up until the mid-1980s, when it changed hands a couple of times before the previous owner bought the car in 2013 “in boxes, buckets, and tubs.” He restored it “over two winters” and finished it in the spring of 2015.
The original upholstery was preserved, as it was in nicely kept and usable condition. The most recent, and therefore final, approved inspection was carried out on 2017-05-15, when the car was still within its valid inspection period, just before the new exemption regulations were introduced on 2018-04-20.
Technical data
Condition
-
Mechanical condition
Starts easily and effortlessly, with the master switch located on the right side of the bulkhead, and the car features a foot starter. There is a slight leak and noise at the exhaust manifold, most likely the manifold gasket or a joint further down. The gears — three forward and one reverse — feel good and precise with the column shifter. The brakes need to be used and exercised; at the moment they take a little while to release after a normal braking.
-
Interior condition
Original interior in a charming, nicely patinated, and fresh condition, including door panels, carpets, and headliner.
-
Exterior condition
Home-painted in an attractive color, a stylish original GM blue-turquoise metallic, Venetian Blue. The paint shows both orange peel and dust particles, yet at the same time the car also gives off a somewhat exclusive impression from a distance. Older BF Goodrich whitewall tires with good tread on original steel wheels.
-
General condition
A fine and reliable classic representative of the model, with interesting history from a GM-in-Sweden perspective.

Facts about the model
The Olympia Rekord, with its scaled-down GM styling cues from the USA, was built until 1957 and featured a four-cylinder inline engine and a three-speed manual gearbox. It was available as a two-door sedan, estate, and cabriolet.
In 1955 it received a mild facelift with a slightly larger rear window and a new grille. According to data from the Swedish Transport Agency, there are currently 310 Opel Olympia Rekords from 1953–1957 registered in Sweden, so you’re not likely to encounter many similar ones out on the road this summer.
