"Here is a car that is a mixture of original and modified parts and now needs a thorough inspection and review to return to its former glory."

Description

Registered in November 1966, and reportedly used by the Police (MP in the Model Designation = model year 1967 and Police version). It has various typical equipment details from its time as a police vehicle, such as interior features, storage compartments, the ceiling zipper, etc. The car is listed as light blue in the registry but has a color code of 60 according to the chassis plate (police livery = black/white). The Police Museum contacted a previous owner in 2015 with a letter inquiring if the car was for sale. They wanted to incorporate it into their collections. The letter is included. Emergency lights and police text were likely removed/repainted when the car left the authority. There are also other details that have been replaced. A tow hitch is installed.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

At the time of the photography, the vehicle was not drivable, but according to information, it should be both startable and drivable. The engine is likely not original. Now also equipped with dual carburetors, originally a single carburetor. Not inspected on a lift. It looks decent but also has areas that need closer examination. Newer exhaust system.

  • Interior condition:

The interior appears to be original in terms of seats and rear seat and is in good condition with some signs of use. The space in the rear, drawers under the rear seat, and door panels are likely from the police era. These have held up well over the years, as has the headliner. Rubber mats are in good condition, but there is missing trim in the front. Instruments, controls, and steering wheel are in good condition with some signs of use.

  • Exterior condition:

Painted in black and white in decent condition, there are damages and areas that appear to have been touched up. Some rust on bumpers and places where there are bubbling spots under the paint.

  • General condition:

As it stands, a good object with an interesting police history. As so many times before, a car to start and use, a rolling restoration, or a thorough overhaul. Regardless, a genuine classic with collector status and potential.

Facts about the model

Volvo Estate Cars - a concept. It all began with the Volvo Duett in 1953. Engineer Erik Skoog designed and constructed a combined professional and leisure vehicle based on the PV 444, called PV 445. Already from 1949, Volvo had been supplying chassis for various modifications, primarily for professional use. The "civilian" Duett closely followed the development of the PV 444/544 model. From the model year 1961, the model received the designation P 210 and stood on its own, eventually outlasting the PV 544. Even in the model year 1963, the newer Amazon came in an estate version, but there was still demand for more spacious and taller Duett models. Not least, it was a well-known utility vehicle for entities like the Police, Telecommunications, and the Postal Service. The Duett and Amazon were manufactured in parallel until 1969. The last Duett rolled off the production line on February 11, 1969. When the 70s arrived, even the Amazon was retired.

Right from the beginning, the Duett, with its frame, was popular for modifications. Cabriolet versions were built, and eventually, there were both Epa tractors and Hot Rods.

The Swedish police used to be organized municipally, which led to some differences. There was also a State Police for certain matters. As automobiles and motorcycles made their way into street life, it became natural for law enforcement to acquire and use them. Stockholm, according to information, was the first to get a police car, a Scania-Vabis, in 1913. Over the years, there was a diverse array of vehicles and appearances in the country's various districts. Eventually, at least the State Police began to create a unified fleet, being the first to paint their vehicles black and white. When the police were centralized and became a national authority on January 1, 1963, 554 police districts were quickly reduced to 119, with the newly formed National Police Board as the coordinating authority. This marked the beginning of a change in the police vehicle fleet. Older vehicles were phased out rapidly and replaced with a more uniform fleet, all painted uniformly in black and white. There were several brands and designs, but of course, there were quite a few Volvo cars. One model that was used extensively was the spacious Duett. It was used for various purposes, including patrols, technical work, K-9 units, and riot control, sometimes in the traditional black and white livery and sometimes in a more civilian appearance. It was always appreciated for its reliability and spaciousness.

Regardless of whether it has been a civilian vehicle or a utility vehicle, in original condition or modified - the Duett is a vehicle that lives on in our hearts and is today a sought-after enthusiast and collector's vehicle.
