Facts about the model

Sweden's best-selling car model. From 1983, Volvo decided to abandon the old model designations 242, 244, and 245 - from now on, all were called 240. In 1984, all variants with injection engines - i.e., GLT, GLE, and Turbo - got a new front with a raised hood and black grille, while all models also received position lights on the front fenders. For 1985, all models were redesigned to have engines with reduced internal friction. This lower friction decreased fuel consumption and improved cold-start properties. The engines featured a new cast-iron block and an aluminum cylinder head.

The Volvo 240, which was based on the 140 series, was introduced in 1974. Over the years, it underwent several changes, and when the successor, the 740, was introduced in 1984, many probably thought the 240 would disappear. However, its production wouldn't cease until 1993.

Initially, the petrol models had either the old B20 or the newer B21 engines, later only B19, B21, or B23 (until 1984), after which only the larger engine, now renamed B230, was used. The manual transmissions in the first year were the M40 (4-speed) and M41 (4-speed with overdrive), but these were replaced by M45 and M46 the following year. From the 1983 model year, the M47 (5-speed) was introduced on the GL. An automatic transmission was available as an option and was a 3-speed Borg-Warner BW35 in the 1975 and 1976 models, replaced in 1977 by the 3-speed Borg-Warner BW55. From the 1980 model year, a more modern 4-speed Aisin-Warner AW71 was introduced on the GLE and GLT, and the following year also on the Turbo. However, it became standard on all models from the 1985 model year.
