Owner's comment

I have had the ABS control unit renovated. There is an invoice with a two-year warranty. I have replaced a valve for the heater core that was leaking coolant, and also replaced all vacuum hoses. I've done some welding on rust spots near the 'dog bones' and some touch-up painting. Oil, filters, and spark plugs have been changed.

Facts about the model

The 9-5 replaced the old Saab 9000 as Saab's largest car. The Saab 9-5 has the classic Saab features but also comes in a historically unusual station wagon model for Saab. At the launch of the 9-5 Combi in 1998, Saab hadn't had a station wagon since the production of the Saab 95 ceased in 1978. The head of design development was Einar J. Hareide.

Technically, only the engines and transmissions were of the same type as in the Saab 9000. The Saab 9-5 is chassis-based on the Opel Vectra and equipped with a split rear axle, which was a first for Saab. When the car was launched, it was softly sprung, which provided good ride comfort but questionable handling characteristics in critical situations. However, this was quickly improved.

When it was released, the interior was perceived as very modern, with features such as the "Night Panel," which allowed for dimming all instruments except the speedometer during night driving. Like the 9-3, it had the ignition key between the front seats. Compared to the 9-3, the space and ride comfort were significantly better, even though the size wasn't much different externally.

The Saab 9-5, particularly its station wagon version, has been very successful in Sweden and was at the top of the sales charts for many years. It has also been ranked several times as the safest car in Sweden by Folksam.
