Description

SAAB 9-5 NG 2010 – Chassis no. 9000005 – mileage: 28358 km

SAAB built ten production-ready cars in a special department internally known as “Frickeboa.” They were assigned chassis numbers 1–10. Chassis no. 1 was taken by the then CEO, Viktor Müller; according to information, that car is today in the Netherlands.

Pre-production shop "Frickeboa"
Ten pre-production MY10 9-5s were assembled, all in Linear trim. Five with a Turbo4 petrol engine, one TTiD4 XWD manual, one TTiD4 XWD automatic, one TiD4 automatic, one Turbob FWD and one Turvo6 XWD. Worth noting is that the TTiD4/XWD/automatic and Turbo6 FWD combinations never made it to the price list.

The car was registered under the registration number NRW140 while it was driven on public roads during its test period. After testing was completed, it was deregistered and removed from the vehicle register.

Prior to Saab’s bankruptcy, the car was sold to a local driver training centre specialising in skid control. The car was fitted with an additional pedal and technical equipment intended to simulate skidding on wet or icy surfaces. However, a major technical oversight was made: the car was equipped with XWD all-wheel drive, meaning it was unsuitable for this type of training and was therefore never used for its intended purpose.

The car was later sold to a local workshop that also dealt in parts from the Saab bankruptcy. The current owner purchased the car approximately 5–6 years ago, and it has been kept in storage ever since.

No. 5 is equipped with a 195 hp diesel engine, automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive. Only one car was built with this specification. All ten cars were hand-built.

Based on the information we have obtained, there may be as few as five of these ten cars still remaining.

The owner has attempted to register the car with the Swedish Transport Agency, but this has not been successful. They have requested a Certificate of Conformity in order to make the car registerable, which seems unusual given that the car was previously registered.

At this stage, the car would either need to be registered in another EU country—as several similar cars have been—or retained as it is within a private collection.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The car starts immediately and runs fine. Due to snowy conditions, a proper test drive was not possible, although the owner test-drove the car a few weeks ago without any issues.

As the car has been stored in a garage for many years, it is recommended to fit a new battery and carry out a general inspection and service. Some warning messages are present, mainly related to a low main battery and a low battery in the remote key fob.

I was able to drive the car both forwards and backwards with no issues, and the gearbox operates as it should. The alloy wheels are in good condition with only a few minor marks and are fitted with good older tyres.

The rear LED light strip on the boot lid has deteriorated and is only partially functioning.

  • Interior condition:

Interior is in well-kept condition, with all seats in good, undamaged order. There are slight marks on the rear seat. Ideally, the interior would benefit from a light reconditioning to present in truly top condition. The door cards, carpets, and headlining are all in nice condition.

The dashboard is undamaged, and all instrumentation works correctly, with no pixelated displays. Electric windows and mirrors function as they should, as does the radio and information display. The seats are electrically height-adjustable and heated, both functions working properly; all other seat adjustments are manual. The air conditioning has not been tested.

The round central sensor for the remote in the dashboard shows some scuffing (see pictures).

The boot area is clean and tidy. Images also show the additional brake pedal fitted in the passenger footwell. According to the owner, this can easily be removed and is unrelated to any registration issues, as the car has never been inspected or MOT-tested since it was deregistered.

  • Exterior condition:

Bodywork is straight with no dents or accident damage. There are two small rust blisters around the upper front windscreen frame, likely caused by a stone chip, as well as a few small blisters around the rear window glass (see pictures).

The paintwork is clean overall, with a few minor stone chips, and would benefit from a light polish to further enhance its appearance. The rear bumper has a few marks and scratches.

The underbody shows no signs of structural damage. There is some light surface rust in places, including on a metal cover underneath the passenger side. The underside of the rear bumper has a few cut-outs, possibly related to the previously fitted additional brake system.

  • General condition:

This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to acquire the first Saab 9-5 XWD Automatic ever built. Already a future classic, it represents an exceptionally rare piece of Saab history.
