Lada Niva 1,7 — 2011

The car that gives functionality a face before appearance. The fact that the bodywork is rusty is fairly unimportant to someone who wants to drive a Niva the way it’s meant to be used – in places where other cars simply can’t go.

Description

This car was imported from Lithuania when new in 2011. It was then owned by one man until his passing. In June 2025, it was sold by the estate to a new owner, who has now chosen to sell the car through Bilweb Auctions after purchasing another four-wheel-drive vehicle. The previous owner recorded the maintenance he carried out in the service book. He was of short stature and appears to have raised the driver’s seat accordingly. However, it is still perfectly comfortable even for taller drivers.

The Lada Niva – or Lada 4x4 as the model was called in 2011 – has never been a marvel of build quality. Yet it has an inherent toughness that makes it easy to overlook broken minor details, some of which may well have been present already when the car was new. Externally, the body shows significant rust damage, but this makes no difference to how the car runs – and it does run. The fan belt may squeal at certain revs, but both engine and gearbox performed well during the test drive. The interior has a few minor blemishes, such as a couple of holes in the backs of the front seats, but a thorough cleaning would make the cabin very presentable. A tow bar is fitted, and the roof rack is included in the sale.

The next owner should address the alternator charging issue and possibly replace the starter battery. The car is being sold deregistered, so vehicle tax must be paid upon re-registration. The annual road tax is SEK 2,868. At inspection, it received a few “good to know” remarks – see the photos – and it is now approved until January 31, 2027. The tires fitted are friction (non-studded) winter tires, approved for winter use. One key is included for the doors and two keys for the ignition. The odometer currently reads 141,610 km (14,161 Swedish miles).

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The car has a parasitic battery drain, which makes it advisable to disconnect the battery terminal until the issue has been resolved. The starter battery may also need to be replaced. The fan belt squeals, and the alternator charges poorly. During the test drive, the check engine light was illuminated. The plastic cap for the clutch slave cylinder reservoir is broken. The thermostat may need to be replaced, as the cooling fan runs constantly.

Aside from these issues, the car performed well during the test drive; the engine and gearbox appeared to function properly, and there were no problems engaging high and low range or the differential lock. Electrical functions such as the horn, cabin fan, and windshield wipers were working at the time of testing.

At inspection, the car was approved but received a couple of “good to know” remarks, including rust in the front suspension spring mounts – see the photo of the inspection report.

  • Interior condition:

The seats are in good condition apart from a couple of small holes on the backrests, and the door panels are also in nice shape. There are a few stains on the headliner, which is otherwise intact. The cabin is somewhat dirty but otherwise in good condition. The trunk mat has a coating or residue that may be removable with cleaning.

In a couple of the photos from the cargo area, white specks are visible – these are snow and nothing else, as it was snowing heavily at the time of photography. The car does not have a radio.

  • Exterior condition:

The body sides show extensive rust damage. Rust is also present along the lower edges of the doors and on the tailgate. Some of the body panels have surface rust as well. Aside from this, the paintwork is in decent condition. The surface finish on the rear bumper has peeled.

  • General condition:

A Lada Niva that wants to be driven — preferably in a straight line through any obstacles in its path. The fact that this car also has a well-worn, patinated exterior only makes it more enjoyable to drive in a carefree manner. The next owner’s priority should be to sort out the charging system so that it starts with ease.

Facts about the model

This is a car built out of necessity. Roads in the Soviet Union were extremely poor, and there was a need for a vehicle capable of handling both bad roads and terrain where no roads existed at all. In 1977, the company then known as VAZ began production in Togliatti. The factory was already producing the VAZ-2101, a licensed version of the Fiat 124. However, the Niva was an in-house design, even though much of its mechanical components were Fiat-based. Unlike many contemporary four-wheel-drive competitors, the Niva did not have a separate frame, but instead featured a unibody construction. The four-wheel drive is permanent, and it is equipped with both high and low range as well as a differential lock.

The VAZ Niva arrived in Sweden in 1980 through the then Soviet-owned importer Matreco. The name VAZ had been dropped in Western European markets in favor of the brand name Lada, although that name did not resonate particularly well in Sweden. Despite this, the name was changed to Lada there as well from 1984. The following year, the Niva received a five-speed gearbox. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the Niva has had several different importers in Sweden. The model has continued to evolve — slowly. From 1995 onwards, the Niva was fitted with fuel injection and the engine was enlarged from 1.6 to 1.7 liters. At the same time, the rear lights were made larger and the tailgate was redesigned.

From 2006, the model was renamed Lada 4x4, as the Niva name was instead used for a new Russian Chevrolet model. However, since 2021 the car has once again been called the Lada Niva Legend — and yes, it is still in production.
