Description
This is a well-preserved car that has been driven in central Sweden—Värmland, Dalsland, and Gothenburg—since new. For the past seven years, it has been owned by well-known automotive journalist Hans Hedberg, who purchased it in the summer of 2017 for use on feature trips for Teknikens Värld magazine Moderna Klassiker.
After driving it in 2017 and early 2018, a decision was made to address some rust issues on the lower sections and give the car a fresh coat of paint in its original dark green color, as it was in good condition but had become sun-faded on the upper surfaces. The repaint was well executed, and the car remains in excellent condition, though some scratches and wear have appeared over the years, along with a minor paint blister on the lower sections—nothing particularly noticeable.
The interior, engine, and other components remain original and in fine condition, reflecting the relatively low mileage of 195,000 km. The car has never been involved in an accident, and based on its excellent condition, we believe the odometer reading to be accurate.
Technical data
Condition
-
Mechanical condition
The car has been well serviced, though unfortunately, the documentation is missing. It features quality Vredestein 185 tires and a tow bar. A pleasure to drive and approved by the vehicle inspection—ready for summer cruising.
-
Interior condition
The De Luxe and Grand Luxe models with leather upholstery feature the more luxurious front and rear seats from the Volvo 164. This example comes in brown-yellow leather, with color-matched door panels in the same shade.
The interior—including seats, headliner, door panels, and dashboard—is in well-preserved original condition, showing normal signs of use but with no notable damage. -
Exterior condition
The body and paint are in great condition. Also in good shape underneath. There is a touched-up scratch on the roof and a small touch-up in the lower corner of the windshield, visible only upon close inspection, but not noticeable in the pictures.
-
General condition
A bit more exciting than a standard 144, with nice equipment, a sharper engine, and a beautiful color combination. A great opportunity for someone looking for an easy-to-drive car (thanks to power steering) that can easily be used as a daily driver during the summer months. Not a show car, but well-maintained with a great overall impression and runs well—that pretty much sums it up.

Facts about the model
Now, the design took on a more restrained and angular shape, reflecting a modern Scandinavian aesthetic. Work on project P660, which later became the 1400 series and ultimately the 140 model, had already begun in June 1960. Early in the process, Volvo decided to produce both two-, four-, and five-door versions. Led by Jan Wilsgaard, the design team created a long-lasting and timeless shape that remained in production from 1966 all the way until 1993, when the 240 series was discontinued.
From the very beginning, Volvo demonstrated its leadership in automotive safety. When the model was introduced, it featured, among other things, a dual-circuit braking system, disc brakes on all wheels, a collapsible steering column, and a laminated windshield designed for flexibility. The passengers were surrounded by a "safety cage" made of box beams, with crumple zones at the front and rear. The doors were equipped with safety locks, the rearview mirror was spring-mounted, and the seats were cleverly designed to reduce injuries such as whiplash.
Previously, various safety features—particularly in the U.S.—had been seen as an indication that a car was inherently unsafe. However, this perception began to shift globally, and Volvo took the lead in safety innovation worldwide.
