Description

A car that was sold new in the Gothenburg area in 1977. It was driven very sparingly by both the first and second owners. The current owner purchased the car about five years ago and has also driven it very little.

The car has been carefully maintained by its current owner, a true car enthusiast. The interior is like new, and you can still catch a hint of that new car smell.

There is a touched-up scratch under the trim on the left door, which should ideally be addressed, as the car is otherwise in fantastic exterior condition.

A fun feature article about this car was published in Klassiker a few years ago. The article is included in our images.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

There are no technical issues to note. The engine runs smoothly, the gears shift as they should, and the brakes work perfectly. Everything else regarding the mechanics is in full working order.

  • Interior condition:

The interior is as close to new condition as you can get on a nearly fifty-year-old car. Nothing to remark on—simply impeccable.

  • Exterior condition:

The paint is glossy and beautiful, with no scratches or parking dents. The previously mentioned scratch under the trim on the driver’s door is the only flaw. The glass is in great condition, and the chrome is well-preserved.

  • General condition:

An overall impression that is truly impressive, making this car a perfect fit for any museum or car collection without hesitation.

Owner's comment

As time is not on my side, I am parting with this wonderful 1970s Opel, hoping that it will find a new owner who will continue to care for it as I have.

Facts about the model

The Ascona B was a popular youth car in the 1980s, as it was affordable to buy and maintain, while still offering good performance and plenty of driving fun. In Sweden, the 1.9-liter engine was the most common.

Due to stricter Swedish emission regulations compared to other countries, the model was only sold with a 1.2-liter pushrod engine (from earlier Kadett models) and a 1.9-liter engine with a high-mounted camshaft (from the Rekord). In other markets, 1.6-liter engines were available, and later also 1.3-liter versions. Toward the end of production, a 2.0-liter engine was introduced, available with or without fuel injection.

The Ascona B shared many similarities with the equivalent generation of the Opel Rekord, but it was slightly smaller, making it more agile on the road. It also achieved major rally success, dominating the national racing scene for many years. The Opel Ascona 400 was built as a pure competition car, but a civilian version was also sold to meet homologation requirements for motorsport.
