Description

The current owner purchased the car in 2021. Even then, it was both inspection-exempt and tax-exempt—a true time capsule from another era. Since then, it has been safely stored in a garage, protected from the elements year-round. When the car came into the current owner’s possession, it started without issue and functioned as it should. For various reasons, however, it was never driven during the period of ownership. Over time, the battery has lost its charge and now needs replacing, and the Wolseley requires a recommissioning service and a general check of its various systems. At present, the car does not start, and for this reason it will need to be collected by recovery or transport. One key is included. Otherwise, the car is in restored condition and, considering its age, presents well overall. With some time and effort invested, it has the potential to improve further.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The car was not started at the time of photography, as it has not been run for several years and the battery is dead. The vehicle has not been used for many years, so a recommissioning service and a thorough check of its various systems are recommended. The tyres have good tread depth.

  • Interior condition:

The interior appears to be original and is in somewhat sad condition, with wear and split seams, among other issues – see photos. The headliner is intact.

  • Exterior condition:

The paintwork is in used condition with some minor imperfections, including areas of dry spray and the occasional paint run. The chrome and brightwork appear to be in good condition. The trim around the front and rear windows is dry and cracked, and the chrome moldings for these are loose – see photos. The door seals need attention, as they are not seated correctly – see photos.

  • General condition:

Overall, the car appears to be in fairly good condition, but it has not been started for many years. With some time and hands-on attention, it could become a very enjoyable car to own and use.

Facts about the model

The Wolseley 4/44 is a charming post-war British saloon introduced in 1952, designed to combine traditional elegance with modern engineering. The model name “4/44” refers to its four-cylinder engine producing 44 horsepower, a 1.25-litre unit derived from the MG XPAG, known for its smooth running and reliability. Power was delivered through a four-speed manual gearbox, and the car featured independent front suspension with torsion bars, giving it comfortable and confident road manners for its time.

Visually, the 4/44 is distinguished by its upright, dignified styling, signature illuminated Wolseley grille badge, and high-quality interior trim, often featuring leather upholstery and polished wood. Positioned as a more refined alternative within the BMC range, it offered buyers a sense of understated luxury without excessive cost. Today, the Wolseley 4/44 is appreciated as a well-built, characterful classic that represents the optimism and craftsmanship of early 1950s British motoring, and remains a pleasant and usable vintage car when properly maintained.
