"One major positive feature of this bike is that it is fully road registered and inspection-exempt, making it completely ready for its new owner. Fun and easy to ride for both kids and adults, it’s also super easy to transport in a car or camper."

Description

The bike was first registered in Sweden on 1975-05-28 and has had only three private owners in total. The current owner purchased it over 40 years ago from an estate sale in Uddevalla, and it has since been stored as part of a private collection in a garage.

Last year, the decision was made to return the bike to the road. The original engine was in poor condition and beyond repair, but fortunately Lifan has produced Z50 replica engines for many years. As a result, a brand-new 50cc engine with a semi-automatic gearbox has been fitted. These engines are visually almost identical to the original Honda unit.

The bike passed its inspection on 2025-05-15, making it inspection-exempt forever. As many Z50s were never road-registered and were used off-road only, finding a fully road-legal example like this makes it especially usable, fun, and desirable today.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The bike starts easily with just a few kicks and runs well once given a few minutes to warm up properly. It’s very easy to ride thanks to the semi-automatic 4-speed gearbox — simply ease off the throttle to change gear. Both front and rear brakes work well, as do the lights. No speedometer or odometer is fitted. The bike feels lively and nippy, with performance that suggests it will comfortably exceed 50 km/h

  • Interior condition:

The bike retains its original seat, which is in usable condition. There are small rips in places, and it appears that the seat may have been slightly shortened at some point..

  • Exterior condition:

Good overall condition throughout. New chrome mudguards and a new headlight have been fitted. The paint around the fuel tank filler has started to blister slightly.
The frame retains its original paintwork, with some paint chips around the fork area. It sits on a good set of alloy wheels with good tyres. The rear suspension springs work fine, though they would ideally benefit from a repaint. Good handlebars and grips complete the bike.

  • General condition:

Fun and ready to ride Z50 with some honest patina. It would benefit from a few simple paint touch-ups and minor cosmetic fixes to improve its appearance — or it can simply be enjoyed as it is.

Facts about the model

The Honda Z50, often called the Monkey Bike, is one of Honda’s most iconic and fun machines ever made. Introduced in the early 1960s, it was originally designed as a small recreational bike, but it quickly became a global cult classic.

Powered by a 50cc four-stroke engine, the Z50 is simple, reliable, and incredibly easy to ride. Early versions used manual gearboxes, while later models (like the K3) featured semi-automatic transmissions, making them accessible to both kids and adults. Despite its size, the Z50 is surprisingly capable and very entertaining to ride.

During the 1970s, the Z50 became hugely popular worldwide. Many bikes were used off-road or on private land, which is why fully road-registered examples are relatively rare today. Its compact size also made it perfect for campers, boats, and caravans — a big part of its charm.
