BMW 635 CSi "The royal family's elegant coupe." — 1983

As a fun and beautiful 1980s coupe from Bavaria, it's a sought-after stylish representative of the brand, and being privately enjoyed for a couple of years only adds to its desirability. Its weighty provenance is hard to resist.

"A beautiful and successful coupe form with perhaps the best vintage BMW six-cylinder engine packaged in a bundle with a royal history of higher value in a nicely used, fine condition."

Description

It was delivered to His Majesty the King's Royal Stables on April 15th, 1983. Although the royal stables certainly housed many practical cars at this time, one must admit that a coupe was a bold choice for a family of five, with three small and two large members. Beautiful form and proud vanity. King Carl XVI Gustaf, Queen Silvia, Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Carl Philip, and Princess Madeleine traveled in the 635 for a couple of years, traded it in October 1985, and reportedly, the king eventually received delivery of a more family-friendly, yet equally bold and even more powerful, BMW M5 E28. And so it goes, so to speak. The M models have been popular in the royal stables.

The buyer from 1986 owned the car for a full 32 years but didn't drive it much; the latest entry in the service book is from May 2012, with the car having driven 21,155 kilometers. Today, the odometer reads 21,160 kilometers, and at the last approved inspection on October 5th, 2023, it had 21,156 kilometers. The car ended up in Glommen north of Falkenberg with a fellow officer colleague of the second owner. An inquiry to the Office of the Marshal of the Court for some more private material for the car's documentation and provenance was fruitless, which one can actually understand. But the car's general documentation is still very nice and pleasant, with a complete service book, warranty certificates, tax receipts, two keys, and delivery documents. The current owner is a well-known collector and dealer of primarily enjoyable cars with a fine history. This BMW easily qualifies for that league.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Engine and gearbox have been serviced and inspected, addressing a previous oil leakage. Unfortunately, documentation was hindered by snow and older summer tires, making a test drive impossible. However, the engine sounds delightfully smooth with its straight-six purr, and the gearbox and clutch feel appropriately responsive during maneuvering for photography outside the garage. The 1980s alarm system has been disarmed and removed, along with the phone docking station, police radio, and other period communication equipment. All that remains are a few screw holes and a typical cassette radio.

  • Interior condition:

The elegant plush upholstery features a small makeshift repair of a classic entry wear. New fabric is included for a more professional partial repair of one side bolster on the extra-equipped Recaro LS Idealsitze seats. These seats are currently highly sought-after accessories in the youngtimer scene, and in the 1980s, they were also an exclusive option in a BMW 635 CSi. Otherwise, the door panels, headliner with sunroof, and carpets are fresh with normal wear on the driver's seat of the latter. Screw holes are present on the upper part of the instrument panel and on the center console from previous phone and radio installations.

  • Exterior condition:

Mainly original paint, but partially repainted, at least the entire right front fender in connection with minor rust repairs behind the fender. Otherwise, it's in a normal exterior condition considering the mileage. There's a small mark/dent below the right rear window and some wear marks on the sunroof. The driver's door lock does not engage with the central locking system, probably due to previous damage to the lock cylinder. Additionally, the left rear window does not fully retract. Original rims with older tires with good tread. The nicely worn S-badge is likely the king's choice, as is the cool placement at the bottom of the rear window. The tow hitch and its reinforcements in the trunk are not the car's most aesthetically pleasing details. On the other hand, they are easy to remedy, that is, by removing the practical tow hitch.

  • General condition:

In a pleasantly patinated and well-maintained condition, with excellent documentation and nice original equipment, the car is attractive as it is. However, the value of its provenance is even more subjective and, for many, holds a particularly special significance.

Facts about the model

The 6 Series debuted in 1977, based on the platform and technology of the contemporary 5 Series. When the new 5 Series E28 arrived in 1983, it brought updates across the board to the 6 Series, refreshing both its chassis and exterior and interior design. The auction car is precisely the first model year of this generation.
