BMC Morris 850 850 cc — 1965

A classic Mini, or "hundkoja," in a fairly untouched original condition. The engine has been replaced with an MG 1100 engine to better keep up with today's traffic pace. (Before electric cars became common, the original 850cc engine might have sufficed.) Never raced or rallied.

"It's the kind of car one would gladly want to have: fairly untouched and used but still in a reasonably functional condition. This is also how the designer Alec Issigonis intended the car to be: small, spacious, simple, and enjoyable to drive."

Description

This car was bought by a newly turned 18-year-old as their first car in 1983. It was sold by a petrol station manager in Hägernäs/Täby, north of Stockholm, who dealt with selected, often English, cars. The 18-year-old had the front fenders replaced and some rust holes repaired before handing over the Mini for a full respray. They kept the car until 2008 but took it off the road in 1999. The Mini was replaced by a Cooper S. However, one day an opportunity arose to trade the Morris 850 for a 1983 Golf GTI. The exchange was made, and the new owner of the 850 already had several Minis in the garage, so it was always put aside until they decided to downsize their collection and sold it to the current owner, who needs to sell it due to a move. During the 18-year-old's ownership, the engine was also swapped for an MG 1100 engine with twin SU carburetors, which was an option available in the 1960s as well. To maintain the feeling of driving an original car, the gearbox was renovated and modified to retain the long original gear lever. The front and rear frames were also renovated by the same person. The rear brakes have Cooper S brake drums, and the front drums are complemented with spacers to accommodate Cooper S wheels. The bumpers are also sourced from the Cooper model. Additionally, a very rare additional instrument panel is installed to use oil pressure and water temperature gauges.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The engine starts easily, but at the time of photography, it ran unevenly until warmed up. The Mini has been equipped with a new SU fuel pump. A startup service and general inspection are recommended as it has not been used for many years.

  • Interior condition:

The interior is in good used condition with some wear. The driver's seat has a couple of small holes in the upholstery, see picture. The rubber floor mats are in better condition than they typically are in such an old Mini.

  • Exterior condition:

Repainted sometime in the 1980s when it also received new front wings. Now the exterior has a nice patina. The car has some touch-up paint and a dent on the right rear fender, see picture. The bumpers are in good condition. Hole in the rear left side sill, see picture.

  • General condition:

A classic BMC-850 in very nice condition. After inspection, it will be the perfect car to attend summer car meets with.

Facts about the model

Alec Issigonis, the designer of the highly acclaimed Morris Minor, was tasked with developing a fuel-efficient small car in the wake of the Suez Crisis. Issigonis was a functionalist; nothing unnecessary was to be included in the new design. Maximizing interior space on the smallest possible footprint was the guiding principle. Therefore, the engine was transversely mounted with the gearbox positioned underneath to save space. The rear hatch folded downward to be used as additional cargo space. With a bit of goodwill, four adults can travel in reasonably comfortable conditions.
