"This is a surprisingly pleasant car in very good condition."

Description

This DKW is in very good condition. The odometer shows approximately 35,000 km, although it is difficult to say whether this is correct or if the car has actually covered 135,000 km. It has been fully restored, though it cannot have been in particularly poor condition prior to the restoration. The engine, gearbox, and brakes have all been rebuilt. New front fenders were fitted prior to repainting. More recently, the car has received new tyres and a new battery.

The car stood unused for many years. A previous owner was unable to get it running properly, but after considerable effort the current owner resolved the issue. He drove the car daily during the 2025 summer season, and it ran – and still runs – very well.

As this is a coupé model, it has no B-pillar, allowing the rear side windows to be wound down.

Facts about the model

The Auto Union 1000 was a mid-size car produced by DKW (Auto Union), replacing the DKW 3=6 model in 1958. It was manufactured in West Germany until 1963, when it was succeeded by the DKW F102. Production continued, however, in Brazil and Argentina, where the Auto Union 1000 S version was built until 1967.

A three-cylinder two-stroke engine is the choice if you’re looking for smooth power delivery. It’s no coincidence that DKW named its earlier model 3=6 (“three equals six”), with the equals sign emphasising that the small 900 cc engine offered the same level of refinement as an inline six-cylinder. DKW is the brand that Saab later drew inspiration from, though Saab used larger and more powerful engines. Combined with elegant bodywork and an inviting interior, DKW cars from the 1950s and 1960s are today regarded as very attractive purchases.
