"A period-correct driving experience and a reflection on how easy to handle and well-functioning these old Amazons are in modern traffic."

Description

It was delivered new to its first owner, a chauffeur named Orvar Andersson from Karlstad, by the Volvo dealer Värmlands Motor AB. Just over a year and 5,000 km later, the current owner’s brother-in-law bought the car and used it sparingly until 1997. He carefully maintained and drove it for just over 100,000 km. Since then, it has been off the road.

Today, the car is inspected, freshly polished, and ready to drive. The documentation is extensive and even entertaining to read for those who appreciate a vehicle’s history. All receipts are included for review, and the total sum from the brother-in-law’s most trusted supplier, VP Autoparts, has been calculated by the current owner to a total of 104,334 SEK.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Easy to start with the right feel in the clutch, gearbox, and brakes. The latter are completely new, both front and rear, along with nearly unused wheels and tires—GoodYear Efficient Grip from 2021.

Before switching to a modified cylinder head for unleaded fuel, the owner conducted extensive research on the different cylinder head types for the B20 engine. The specific head that was installed is documented with serial number, casting number, weight, and the designations of the modified head.

Additionally, the engine has been fitted with electronic ignition, though a valve adjustment may be needed in the future. A new fuel tank has also been installed.

  • Interior condition:

Stylish and well-preserved interior, with a complete and clean dashboard where the wrinkle finish around the instrument cluster remains intact. There is some leakage or moisture marking at the lower right corner of the rear window. The floor mat has seen more wear than the rest of the interior. The period-correct Philips radio works perfectly.

  • Exterior condition:

Original paint with several touch-ups, sealings, and repairs. These contribute to the car’s patina, though they may appear somewhat unsightly upon close inspection. They are by no means necessary to address for a representative use of the car but are also not too difficult to improve should one wish to enhance its overall appearance further.

  • General condition:

A charming history, late model year, and low mileage, combined with the engaging documentation, practical updates, and a representative condition with an honest patina, give the car an overall highly attractive impression.

Facts about the model

The final model year of the Volvo Amazon was 1970. Production of the model began in 1956 and ended on July 3, 1970, when the last Amazon rolled off the assembly line at Volvo's Torslanda factory. A total of 667,791 units were produced, making it Volvo’s most-produced car at the time.

During its final model year, the Amazon was only available as a two-door model with the B20 engine, which was introduced in 1969. The car also featured disc brakes all around and standard seat belts—part of Volvo’s commitment to safety. After production ceased, the Amazon was fully replaced by the Volvo 140 series. The last Amazon ever built is now preserved at the Volvo Museum in Gothenburg.
