"Here, the focus can be on servicing and reviewing the technical aspects while preserving its well-worn charm. It can be a bit stubborn at startup and, in general, has a very British road manner. So, there are a few quirks. However, we believe that a mechanic with the right passion for classic sports cars will have it sorted in no time."

Description

The car was sold new in Sweden in 1964. Despite Sweden having left-hand traffic until 1967, the car, like most vehicles, was left-hand drive. In the land of left-hand traffic, the United Kingdom, only right-hand drive vehicles are used. According to some sources, the car has been in the current family since as early as 1968. However, we have been able to verify ownership back to 1983.

The car has been stationary for extended periods as the current owner is in his 80s and does not drive much. He has therefore decided to sell his Triumph sports car. The car was last inspected in 2018 and is exempt from periodic inspections under current regulations.

Only one ignition key is included with the car, but it comes with a jack, a spare wheel, and period-correct seat belts.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Four-cylinder inline engine, 2.2 liters, with twin Stromberg carburetors, which in this version was rated at just over 100 hp. Four-speed gearbox without overdrive. Runs unevenly when cold-starting, occasionally backfires through the carburetors, and requires the choke to be pulled out even after warming up. A thorough inspection of the carburetors and ignition system is needed, as well as a check and replacement of fuel hoses and other components.

Only briefly test-driven in an industrial area. The car shakes quite noticeably when setting off—we don’t know why, but a likely guess would be the prop shaft support bearing or worn engine mounts. The buyer will need to investigate this further. Reportedly, the entire front suspension was rebuilt about 10 years ago.

The speedometer has been stuck since 1998 when the cable broke. It currently reads 54,700 km, but the seller estimates the total mileage to be around 70,000 km.

The brakes feel somewhat stiff, though this may be normal as there is no brake servo. The handbrake lever is difficult to release once engaged and requires attention. The tires are old with visible dry cracks and need replacing. The exhaust system’s tailpipe has been replaced with a thicker-than-original version.

  • Interior condition:

Charming interior with signs of wear. The floor mat has been replaced with a thinner material resembling the original. The driver's seat frame, which holds the padding in place, has cracked and needs to be replaced (see photo). The cabin fan is non-functional. The Blaupunkt car radio has an uncertain functionality.

  • Exterior condition:

According to the owner, the car was repainted in the late 1970s, at which time all fenders were replaced and existing rust was repaired. The paint has aged well over time, with some minor blemishes and a few small bubbles near the sills. Overall, the paint quality is typical for its era.

The rubber seals are somewhat dry. The bumpers and chrome trim are in a normally worn, usable condition (see photos). An older soft top is included—it is intact but dry and worn. A hardtop is also included separately (see additional photos).

We have not test-fitted the soft top or hardtop. The car has not been lifted for a thorough inspection of the undercarriage, but what is visible appears to be in good condition.

  • General condition:

Don't let the listed remarks discourage you. In our opinion, this is the perfect car to improve step by step without having to take everything apart at once. You can drive it while gradually replacing parts as needed. Some call this a rolling restoration—you decide the level of work you want to undertake.

Facts about the model

The Triumph TR4 was a British sports car, developed as an evolution of the TR3 model. The Triumph TR4 was introduced for the 1961 model year and was produced in its base version until 1965. Much of the mechanics remained the same as its predecessor, but it now featured a newly designed body by Italian designer Giovanni Michelotti.

In early 1965, the chassis and rear suspension were updated, introducing independent rear suspension (IRS). This resulted in a smoother ride and improved comfort. This version was given the designation TR4A IRS. However, not everyone was pleased with the change. In the U.S., it was considered too expensive, and purists felt it had become too soft in handling. As a result, Triumph continued to produce the TR4A without IRS, primarily for the U.S. market.

Its successors, the TR5 and TR6, featured six-cylinder engines—but that’s another story.
