BMW 501/8 — 1958

A true garage find, this BMW 501 V8—nicknamed the "Barockängel"—is one of two project cars in this auction, with this one being complete. It has remained in the same family since the 1970s.

"This car is fully complete but requires a full renovation, having been parked for 50 years. It features a well-preserved and complete interior, is registered in Sweden, and comes with older documentation."

Description

Originally sold and registered in Sweden in 1958, this BMW 501 has reportedly been stored in a garage since the early 1980s and, before that, in a barn, according to the wife who inherited it. The last recorded inspection took place on October 31, 1973, indicating that the car was likely taken off the road around 1975.

The previous owner also owned the other BMW 501 listed in this auction. It was likely intended that both cars would be restored, but unfortunately, the project was never completed.

Due to poor lighting and limited space, photographing the car was challenging, but both vehicles have now been moved outdoors to facilitate transport and loading.

A significant amount of old documentation accompanies the car, and it remains registered in Sweden.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The engine is complete and remains in the car, but since it has been stationary for over 50 years, it will require a full restoration.

The car has not been tested, only a visual inspection has been carried out.

  • Interior condition:

Interior is complete and in fairly good condition, with the seats, headliner, and dashboard instrumentation intact.

  • Exterior condition:

Bodywork is complete but has rust damage on the front and rear wings and along the door edges. The other BMW 501 in this auction has much better bodywork but is missing an engine. The boot space appears solid, and the underbody shows signs of older welding and repairs.

  • General condition:

My suggestion would be to purchase both cars and combine them to build one well-functioning car. The remaining spare parts would be highly valuable to other buyers searching for sought-after BMW 501 components.
