"A classic in need of some attention before an MOT inspection. A perfect starting point for anyone looking to carry out a light restoration of a 900 S. The rust in the doors can be dealt with gradually. Once the rust has been addressed, the car could be fully resprayed to create a very fine Saab Turbo."

Description

The car features one of the model’s most popular colour combinations: black with red interior. It is equipped with cruise control, but this could not be tested as only a short test drive was carried out in an industrial area. The car must therefore undergo an MOT inspection before being used on the road.

The car has had 12 owners, including the current one who purchased it in 2023. The owner is a Saab enthusiast who restores and collects classic models of the brand. The car was serviced this summer with new oil, filters and spark plugs. It is now being sold due to lack of space. The car appears to be in relatively unmodified original condition, which is always an advantage when restoring a vehicle to factory specification. Included with the car are the owner’s manual, older MOT inspection reports, workshop receipts and the spare wheel. Only one ignition key is available.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The engine starts easily and runs well. It is equipped with a 2.0-litre 16-valve low-pressure turbo engine producing 141 horsepower from the factory. The manual gearbox has five gears and operates well. The most recent MOT inspection was carried out in 2021, and the car has been stored off the road in a garage since 2023. The brakes now require inspection and attention before a new MOT, for example the handbrake lever must be pulled fully up before it engages.

  • Interior condition:

Attractive seats with no noticeable wear. It is evident that seat covers were previously used to protect the interior. The door panels have also stood up well to the passage of time. The headliner has been re-trimmed using original NOS fabric from the Saab Club’s stock. Fitted with a more modern car radio.

  • Exterior condition:

The paintwork has picked up some blemishes over the years. There are door dings, scratches and areas of oxidation. Some stone chips are present, mainly along the front edge of the bonnet. A dent in the bonnet and another on the driver’s door are the most noticeable in this respect. The doors have rust along their lower edges, which is common on unrestored Saab 900s, and the tailgate also has rust at the lower edge. Please see the photos. The underside appears to be in good condition from what could be seen without a vehicle lift. In 2014, remarks were noted at the MOT inspection regarding the wishbone mountings. These were repaired by a workshop. (See photos of the inspection report and receipts.)

  • General condition:

Classic 900 OG in need of some attention. Overall, the car feels solid and would work very well either as a daily driver or as a rolling restoration. One advantage is the unusually fine interior, which is difficult to find in this condition.

Facts about the model

The Saab 900 OG was introduced on 12 May 1978 ahead of the 1979 model year. The car was based on the successful Saab 99. The body was developed from that of the 99 while retaining the same basic layout, but with a new, longer front end. This allowed for more space in the engine bay and improved crash protection for the occupants.

In 1987, the 900 underwent minor cosmetic design changes with a so-called facelift, featuring a redesigned front and bumpers that gave the car a rounder and less angular appearance. To keep costs down, Saab retained the basic chassis largely unchanged throughout the entire production run of the 900.

Power output varied depending on model year and market. The 1990 Saab 900 S was equipped with a 16-valve low-pressure turbo engine. Figures for horsepower vary between 141 and 145 hp. The earlier high-pressure turbo was rated at 175 hp.
