"An odd car in an odd design."

Description

Low-mileage with few previous owners. This car was traded in at only 11 months old at a Ford dealership in Norrköping. There, it was found by its second owner, a man named Gösta. Ten years earlier, he had won 10,000 SEK in a betting game and used that money to buy a VW Beetle, which he now traded in for the beautiful Ford. He was proud of his fine car, which he mostly used to travel to his summer house by Slätbaken, a bay south of Norrköping. After each trip, he would clean his beloved Taunus meticulously with a polishing cloth and toothbrush. At the age of 81 in 1992, the car was sold to a person who began converting it into a rally car. Two years later, it was sold to the previous owner who continued working on the project at a slow pace, but he also did not complete the project. In 2011, the project was taken over by the current owner who built a 1700 cc engine based on a corresponding Saab engine. (It was from Ford that Saab originally sourced their V4 engines). In the spring of 2023, the car was inspected and put back into traffic in its current condition. It is now exempt from inspection according to current regulations. Before the commissioning, the car underwent an overhaul, including the brake system where the old brake calipers were replaced with new ones. New tires were also fitted, studless winter tires suitable for enthusiastic driving on gravel roads. OZ rims, three-bolt design. The large reverse light is not connected.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Newly built 1700cc V4 that runs very well. The radiator is a bit too small for a 1700cc engine, so the temperature rises on hot days. A swap to a larger radiator is recommended. New brake calipers and refurbished rear brakes. It might be time to replace the shock absorbers. Poor idle. It was perfect earlier this year, but likely something has clogged the Weber carburetor due to not driving the car much. Deposits or debris from the tank. However, it began to run better when filled with 98-octane fuel and after adding fuel system cleaner to the gasoline. Raised fuel tank from an Opel Kadett (or so it is said). 12-volt battery.

  • Interior condition:

Not much to write about. The fabric is torn at the left shoulder of the driver's seat. Otherwise, see pictures. There are probably old adhesive residues on the inside of the trunk lid. The fuel gauge is running backwards. Polarity reversed? Rear seat is missing.

  • Exterior condition:

Essentially in good condition. The paint, which is around 40 years old, has chips, scratches, surface rust, and one or a few dents. See photos. Dry rubber seals. Poor rear bumper. Pitted chrome. Crack at the lower edge of the right front fender filled with rustproofing agent. The rims were new in 1996 but have tarnished over time, causing the right rear to leak air. New studless winter tires in 2023.

  • General condition:

A car in a nice, sporty working condition with the opportunity to fine-tune both small and somewhat larger details to your own liking.

Facts about the model

From the beginning, this model was intended for the American market where it was named the Ford Cardinal. However, German Ford took over the project and renamed it the Ford Taunus 12M, as the Americans were not yet ready for a small, European front-wheel drive car. The V4 engine in these Fords was later slightly modified and used in the Saab 96. A standard 12M had a displacement of 1183 cc, while the 12M TS was equipped with a full 1498 cc. Therefore, the 12M TS also came with front disc brakes to handle the increased power. The model, which had the internal designation P4, was produced between 1962 and 1966.
