"This car has mostly led a quiet life in its heated garage in a nearby suburb of Stockholm in recent years, having been decommissioned since 2017. It now requires attention, inspection, and starting up. Probably no major repairs are needed, but no guarantees can be given. It's a nice model with two-tone paint and embellishments including fine trim, hubcaps, and details befitting a Fiat Granluce."

Description

This car was first registered for traffic in Sweden on January 1, 1960. The most recent owner and user acquired the car in October 2013. A complete ownership history is included, detailing eight owners, one of whom owned the car from February 9, 1961, to November 7, 1984.

The last four owners each kept the car for approximately 10 years, and it appears to have been used as an enthusiast car for meetups and outings. The odometer currently reads 70,560 km, though it is unclear whether it has rolled over.

The car comes with a binder of documents, including a copy of the original inspection certificate. Additionally, Swedish and Italian instruction manuals, other manuals, and brochures are included. A roof rack, likely intended for the car, is also provided, along with various spare parts such as trims and engine components. A set of keys is included as well.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Not test driven. It was easy to roll, and the gears seemed to shift as they should. The battery is discharged so a start attempt was not possible, but when connected, the electrical functions could be seen working. It should also be inspected before attempting to start. Not checked on a lift, hence the underside is hard to assess, but the visible parts looked okay in terms of vital components, and some sheet metal has been repaired on the vehicle.

  • Interior condition:

The interior appears to be original and is complete with normal wear and tear for its age. Newer speakers in the front doors. Steering wheel, controls, and buttons are in good and patinated condition. The headliner looks good.

  • Exterior condition:

Good paintwork with some drips and touch-ups, and normal wear for its age. Shiny, glass, trims, rubber, and lighting details in good condition with patina. Nice additional lights. Rims with hubcaps and beauty rings in good condition. Tire age uncertain.

  • General condition:

A charming little wagon that is 65 years old and now needs a detailed inspection. Just the sight of this jaunty little wagon, with many design features, puts one in a good mood. Together with a well-known Swedish history, it is a fine classic and enthusiast car from the era of small, lively family cars.

Facts about the model

Fiat (Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino) was founded in 1899 by a group of industrialists and investors. One of them, Giovanni Agnelli, served as CEO from 1900 to 1920 and Chairman of the Board from 1920 to 1943. Since then, the Agnelli family has held prominent positions within Fiat. The company quickly grew into an industrial conglomerate involved in shipbuilding, aircraft and marine engines, and railway manufacturing, though its primary focus was always automobile production. Fiat expanded its operations throughout Italy and Europe, and through licensed manufacturing, its vehicles reached markets worldwide. Fiat's portfolio ranged from economy cars to utility vehicles, luxury sedans, sports cars, and race cars.

In the mid-1950s, Fiat began producing rear-engined economy cars while continuing to build traditional vehicles with front-mounted engines, rear-wheel drive, and four doors in the small mid-size segment. One such model was the Fiat 1200 Gran Luce, produced between 1957 and 1961.

The Fiat 1200 Gran Luce was unveiled at the Turin Auto Show in November 1957. It replaced the premium version of the Fiat 1100, known as the Turismo Veloce. The new model featured a 1,221cc engine producing 54 hp, a wider windshield, larger side moldings, and a panoramic rear window. To match its "Gran Luce" (Grand Light) moniker, it came with two-tone paint, ribbed chrome on the C-pillars, and chrome accents on the hood, sides, and trunk. It also adopted the fashionable design trend of the time with subtle fins on the rear fenders.

In total, around 400,000 Fiat 1200s were produced before it was succeeded by the Fiat 1300/1500, known in Sweden as the "Juventus."

Since its founding in 1899, Fiat has been involved in numerous partnerships and collaborations with other brands and industrial companies. As of 2021, Fiat is part of the Stellantis Group.
