Facts about the model
After the Second World War, when Austin converted from wartime production back to private cars, it was time for new models in the family car segments. The A30 came in the small segment, the A40 somewhat larger, and the A50 in the mid-range segment. Although the A40 arrived already in the late 1940s and was rather bulky, these were bodies with the newer "shoe box" design. All the models were developed from 1957 with upgrades to the A35, A45 and A55. The A55 in particular was a comfortable and practical car and common on our roads from the late 1950s into the 1960s. With the additional name Cambridge, it offered a reliable car in British style with BMC's classic 1.5 litre engine. When the A55 arrived, there was an updated rear section with more spacious boot capacity and larger rear window. Not infrequently, the cars featured two-tone paintwork. In total, approximately 154,000 examples were built. From 1959 it became something quite different when the Pinin Farina-designed bodywork arrived, but that is another story.
