"A perfect project to spend hobby hours on this winter. The goal: back on the road by spring."

Description

This car is being sold from an estate, which means we only know what can be seen and read from the available information. It has been started and driven on the yard with the help of an external fuel supply – the hose can be seen in several of the photos and the video. The most recent inspection was carried out in 2012, and the car has not been driven much since then. Few owners, with the current estate ownership dating back to 1999.

With some mechanical skill and servicing, it could be made reliable and reasonably presentable. The paint looks good from a distance, but on closer inspection you can see quite a lot of orange peel texture. A typical “start up and drive as is” car that can be improved over time. There are no additional keys beyond those shown in the photos.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

During the short test drive we carried out, the car ran well in both engine and transmission using external fuel supply. The brakes are functioning but would benefit from an overhaul. The engine would benefit from a service, and the fuel tank needs cleaning or possibly replacement.

  • Interior condition:

Largely intact and in original condition. Wear on the driver’s seat as shown in the photos. Moisture stains and dirt on the seats, door panels, and headliner.

  • Exterior condition:

Garage paint with scratches and damage. Tape repairs in the rear door sills, most likely a classic rust issue. Porous chrome. Unusually straight bumpers.

  • General condition:

This car appears never to have been in poor condition but has instead been kept roadworthy/repaired before it was considered a collector’s car. Receipts included for engine overhaul parts cannot be guaranteed to belong to this car, but they were found together with the other documents inside the vehicle.

Facts about the model

The Mercedes 180 (W120), introduced in July 1953, was Mercedes-Benz’s first newly developed volume model after the Second World War. With its unitary “Ponton” body, it marked a complete break from its predecessors. By the time production ended in October 1962, almost half a million cars had been built in various versions. The final development, the 180c/180Dc, was introduced in July 1961. The petrol version gained increased power through a modified valve mechanism, while the diesel was now fitted with the two-litre engine from the W110.
