""Yes, no one yet knows how old a Volkswagen can become!”—a slogan from the 1950s. Here is a fine 1303 S in excellent original condition that has now been on our roads for over half a century. This low-mileage car, with two schoolteachers as previous owners and two car enthusiasts as caretakers, represents a classic history for a well-maintained Beetle. During the test drive, inspection, and photographing of the vehicle, I was struck by how trouble-free and enjoyable it is to drive a Beetle—solid German quality. The appearance, condition, history, and the aura surrounding this Beetle are all positive."

Description

The car was purchased new by a schoolteacher in October 1972, who primarily used it for commuting between Stockholm and her country house in the Nyköping area. The second owner, also a schoolteacher, bought the car in November 1999 and lived in Nyköping. The third owner acquired the car in July 2008. He was an enthusiastic collector of cars, mopeds, bicycles, and curiosities, mainly from the 60s and 70s. For 15 years, the pastel white Beetle was part of his collection. Services and repairs during that time are recorded in a small black notebook that accompanies the car.

The fourth owner acquired the vehicle in May 2023, had it inspected (for the last time), and performed an oil change. Since the inspection, the car has driven 1,050 km. The car comes with a service booklet, instruction manual, and other documentation, along with dual keys. Additionally, VW aluminum wheels with lug bolts and tires are included.

The car is roadworthy and insured with MHRF.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts easily and runs well. During a gentle drive in a residential area, the clutch, shifting, steering, brakes, and other mechanics functioned flawlessly. The undercarriage has not been inspected on a lift but appears to be in good condition. No comments from the vehicle inspection station.

  • Interior condition:

Seats, door panels, dashboard, carpets, etc., are in excellent original condition, with only minor cracks and some slight wear. Extra rubber mats are included. The headliner is in good condition with some slight sagging at the C-pillar and behind the backrest. Everything appears to function as intended.

  • Exterior condition:

The pastel white paint appears to be largely original. The stone guard on the left rear fender is missing, and the fender may have been repaired some time ago. There is mild wear from use, including paint chipping, some scratches, and small “bubbles” along the trim between the fenders and the body at the lower edges. Otherwise, the vehicle has aged gracefully. Glass, chrome, rubber, and lighting details are all in similar condition. It has Minilite-style wheels and Hankook tires, also in good condition. The engine and trunk areas are in good condition.

  • General condition:

A model is often said to be at its best towards the end of its production run. Here, with roots in the 1930s but featuring relatively modern and upgraded technology and safety from the 1970s, the combination of its fine condition, history, and low mileage makes it a truly authentic and usable classic and enthusiast vehicle.

Facts about the model

Later models of the VW Type 1 became increasingly powerful, with larger cargo spaces and period-typical interior features for improved safety, such as integrated headrests. For the 1971 model year, the 1302S was introduced with a 1600 cc engine producing 50 hp. Additionally, it featured a McPherson strut front suspension, which provided a larger front cargo area, and an IRS rear suspension. These upgrades improved handling and comfort.

By 1973, the 1303S received another upgrade, including a completely new dashboard and a panoramic windshield. Externally, it featured larger rear lights and a gas cap with “finger grips.”

This was the last “Beetle” built in Germany from 1973 to 1975 (the Cabriolet model continued to be produced until 1978). Today, it is appreciated as the most spirited, safe, and comfortable Beetle.
