Description

This car has been driven in Texas and in recent years near New York. It is of the last version, characterized by the rear wing starting already at the rearview mirrors. Manufactured late 1993, model year 1994. Production ceased in December 1993.

Equipped with automatic transmission, AC (not tested), Airbag, and ABS, which were only available the last year.

The car was purchased by a Swedish Saab enthusiast in the spring of 2023 and registered in June 2023. It has been used little last summer. The car has traveled 190,000 miles, which is equivalent to just over 30,000 Swedish miles. The hood and one door lower part have been repainted. Otherwise, it is untouched. Before being taken to Sweden, a brand new convertible top was installed by a former Saab dealer. The interior is closed. Door panels and carpets need to be replaced to make the car really nice. Seats are okay. The dashboard has dry cracks on top, see picture.

The car starts easily and runs smoothly in engine and gearbox. According to information from the previous owner, the car has been regularly serviced. The last service was done four to five years ago (according to the previous owner), so it’s probably time again now. The car was approved by the vehicle inspection without remarks.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Fully functional to drive. Good comfort. Some squeaking from belts in the engine compartment. Needs service soon, as we do not know the last service date.

  • Interior condition:

Door panels and carpets need to be replaced for the car to be in really good condition. Seats are okay. The dashboard has dry cracks on top, see picture.

  • Exterior condition:

Normal condition for a car with 300 000 km. Looks okay but has some scratches and scuffs upon closer inspection. The fog lights at the front under the bumper are removed. The brackets are still in place. There’s a bit of play in the button for the convertible top. The top has been working fine to fold down over the past year, but currently, it’s acting up. The fuses need to be checked. A mechanic has been booked for troubleshooting on June 7th in Trollhättan.

  • General condition:

A car that’s fun to spruce up to top condition. A new convertible top and rust-free are two big pluses. The large engine and being one of the last produced are also exciting. It works fine as it is too. Then you don’t need to be so cautious with it. Good overall impression but not for a meticulous buyer due to signs of use and dry climate. Suitable as a rolling, fully usable restoration project car.

Facts about the model

Saab 900 Cabriolet debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1983 – a novelty that sent the automotive press into a frenzy. A four-seater convertible without a roll bar was significant, and in the first year of 1986, barely 400 units were sold in the USA. The following year, when the 900 got the sloping front, the convertible was available for all markets – and as before, it was manufactured in Finland.

In total, 48,880 Saab Cabriolets were built until 1993. In the last two years, they were equipped with airbags and ABS. The Saab 900 Cabriolet was available both with and without turbo, and from 1988, the turbo was water-cooled. The toughest variant is the 16S Cabriolet with the Aero look.

Over the years, the Saab 900 Cabriolet has been extensively used in movies and TV series. It appears in High Fidelity and the comedy series Seinfeld, among others.
