Ford Taunus 20M TS 2,0 V6 — 1965

The Taunus 20M TS – “Touring Sport” – was the sporty model of the P5 generation, combining a sleek two-door body with a punchy 90 hp V6. These were quick cars in their day, and finding a genuine 20M TS today is becoming seriously rare.

"Owned by a true Ford enthusiast for over 25 years, this rare 20M TS runs and drives extremely well, with a sharp-shifting gearbox and plenty of classic V6 character. Inspection-exempt and ready to enjoy, it also comes with a wealth of valuable spare parts."

Description

The current owner is a true Ford enthusiast who owned a similar model back in the 1960s. After selling that car, he continued collecting spare parts and spent years searching for another Taunus 20M TS in good condition. His search eventually led to this car, which he purchased around 25 years ago.

It has had just three owners in total. The first kept it for an impressive 27 years, the second for around two years, and the current owner for the past 25 years.

When purchased, some older welding repairs had already been carried out around the boot floor and suspension tower in the engine bay. The paintwork also had various scratches and marks, so the owner decided to have the car completely repainted in white, adding the period-style red roof for a sportier look.

The interior was already in very good condition. The seats had suffered some sun bleaching, so protective seat covers were fitted – and remarkably, they have remained in place for over 24 years, helping preserve the original upholstery underneath.

The car also comes with a massive collection of sought-after spare parts, accumulated by the owner over many years. There is a substantial amount included, with the parts alone potentially representing a significant proportion of the car’s value – a real bonus for the next owner. The odometer currently shows 52,363 km, although the car has been around the clock once, giving an actual mileage of approximately 152,363 km. This is supported by the car’s older inspection records.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

A couple of pumps of the accelerator and the engine fires straight into life, settling into a smooth, healthy V6 idle. A recent compression test showed good readings across all cylinders. The long-term owner has serviced the car himself and kept it in good running condition, with recent work including a new ignition coil and leads.

The main point requiring attention is the brake servo, which is leaking, so the owner has disconnected the vacuum pipe.

On the road, it is a really enjoyable car to drive, with a wonderfully tight and direct gearbox and that unmistakable V6 soundtrack. Finished with a smart set of wheels and hubcaps with good, although older, tyres.

  • Interior condition

Great period colour combination of red and white, giving the interior plenty of classic 1960s character. According to the owner, the original seats were in good condition but had suffered some sun bleaching, so seat covers were fitted when he bought the car 25 years ago and have remained in place ever since.

Door cards, interior panels and carpets are all in good condition. The headliner has two small repaired holes, reportedly caused when a rear passenger accidentally caught it with an umbrella when the car was just one week old – a little piece of the car’s history.

The dashboard and steering wheel present well, with the original gauges working as they should. A more modern radio and speakers have also been fitted.

  • Exterior condition

The car presents well overall and, as mentioned, has had an older repaint. Looking more closely, there are some rust blisters around the front wings and the upper and lower rear wheel arches. Nothing appears major at present, but these areas will require attention in the future.

The body panels are straight, while the paint has become slightly dull and would benefit from a good polish. The clear coat on the red roof has started to lift in places, giving it more of a period patina look.

Underneath, the car appears solid overall with evidence of some older repairs. There are a few holes in the driver-side floor, which will require welding but should be a relatively straightforward repair. The chrome remains bright and presentable overall, with just a few age-related marks.

  • General condition

These cars are seriously rare today, especially with the 2.0-litre V6. It is a great car to drive, sounds fantastic and comes with a huge collection of valuable, hard-to-find spare parts. The cosmetic issues are not urgent, meaning the car can be driven and enjoyed exactly as it is, with improvements made over time.
