"BMW's comeback with a small two-seater sports car quickly became a success. This example has had a quiet life and has mainly been driven during the bright part of the year. The well-balanced six-cylinder 2.0i engine with 150 hp does its job. The car is in fine and well-preserved original condition."

Description

This car was registered for traffic on 11 May 2001. It has covered only 77,900 km, of which approximately 20,000 km in the last ten years. The current owner took over the car in February this year.

The car comes with the original instruction booklet, completed service booklet, manual for a newer stereo as well as various receipts and all keys. A car cover is also included.

The car was inspected on 17 April without comment and is ready to drive.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

It started easily and the engine ran smoothly and quietly. During a test drive on rural roads and in built-up areas, everything was experienced as functioning well regarding steering, clutch, gearbox, road-holding and brakes. A lively, solid and stable drive with sufficient power for a small two-seater sports car. The six-cylinder engine and other details in the car are well balanced.

Not inspected on a lift, but what could be seen underneath looked good and there were no comments during vehicle inspections.

  • Interior condition

Fine interior in original condition with light wear from use. Comfortable seats. Door panels, panels and carpets are in fine condition. Steering wheel, controls, dashboard and gauges are also in fine condition. There is a scratch/damage on the gear shift knob. All electrical functions work, and the AC cools. Newer Pioneer stereo.

  • Exterior condition

Fine, as it appears, original paintwork in the classic colour Hellrot 215/2, with normal mild wear consistent with age and mileage, including a few stone chips, minor scuffs and a small door ding. Glass, trim, emblems and lighting details in fine condition. Fine wheels with Good Year tyres purchased in 2024, which have covered relatively few miles. Tight and good hood with well-functioning electric up/down operation.

  • General condition

Time flies, and it is now in fact well over 30 years since the Z3 model arrived. It is now entering full speed into the class of classic and enthusiast cars. The history and condition of this car, and not least the fine little straight-six in the engine bay, make this red beauty an excellent collector car.

Facts about the model

BMW has a long tradition of models and vehicles in sporty and open versions. Both in the 30s and 50s there were a number of vehicles with sporting ambitions for those seeking wind in their hair. In the 60s, 70s and 80s, it was mostly closed vehicles with both saloon and coupé bodies that had sports and GT ambitions. Although the odd one received a canvas roof, no true classic open two-seater sports car was produced. However, in 1989 a new and distinctive little car was launched, the BMW Z1. Z stands for Zukunft, the German concept for future. The most distinctive feature was that the doors did not open in the traditional way, but slid down into a relatively high door sill. It was not a success at the time, but is today a highly sought-after collector's item. At this time, when Mazda MX-5 Miata arrived and turned all concepts upside down and again focused on a simple little sports car in the style of the 50s/60s, it became clear that a market existed out there; people clamoured for small, nimble open cars. This gave many car manufacturers sleepless nights, but soon more were lining up at the starting blocks. If the Z1 was somewhat special and a test balloon, BMW now had blood on its teeth. In 1994 the answer was presented in the form of a new model, the Z3 (E36/7). It was an immediate success, even James Bond drove it in film. It was manufactured as model years between 1995 and 2002 and also acquired a sibling in the distinctive coupé in 1999 (E36/8). Traditional layout on both with rear-wheel drive. The engines were straight-fours and sixes ranging from 1.8 L to 3.2 L, with power outputs from 116 bhp to 321 bhp. The largest was fitted in the M model. The gearboxes were five- or six-speed manual, or four- or five-speed automatic. In April 1999 a facelift was presented with, among other things, a new rear end and some changes to the engine programme as well as interior details. The new straight small six-cylinder 2.0i engine received much praise for its refined running and fine engine sound. With its 150 bhp it was sufficient for driving pleasure in a small open car on winding roads.

In total, according to reports, 279,273 Roadsters and 17,815 Coupé versions were built.
