"A fun-to-drive sports classic with potential."

Description

This MGB was imported in 2010 from Florida, USA, by an individual in Örebro who often dealt in American cars. The plan was to restore the car, but the project stalled after he had a workshop replace the entire floor. With too many projects ongoing, he sold it to a buyer in Sandviken, who sanded down the body and began preparing it for painting. Due to health issues, that owner had to give up the project, and the car was stored in a garage.

The current owner purchased the MGB in 2017 in its then-current condition and began the restoration by ordering parts from England and engaging a paint shop in Ludvika. Most of the chrome parts were replaced with new ones, and the car received new floor mats. The clutch and braking system were also refurbished. Other work included fitting a new fuel pump and tank, an engine inspection and service, and installing various new carburettor parts followed by fine-tuning. The car has also been fitted with new tyres, new chrome wire wheels, a new grille, and a sports steering wheel.

The MGB was registered and passed its roadworthiness inspection in 2018. Included with the car are a hardtop, soft top, and tonneau cover, all in good condition. Also included are a workshop manual, a record of repairs and purchases with invoices and receipts, and a selection of both new and used spare parts. Two sets of keys. The odometer currently reads just over 47,000 km, though it has most likely been replaced since the car’s import from the USA.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Runs well in both engine and drivetrain. The gearbox has distinct, “tight” shifts. Brakes engage smoothly and effectively, and the car tracks steadily on the road. Equipped with seat belts. There is a leak in the exhaust system, probably at a pipe joint (according to the owner, this has now been fixed).

  • Interior condition:

The interior appears to be in generally good condition, although the dashboard seems to be in a less well-restored state.

  • Exterior condition:

Repainted. The paintwork is in usable condition with imperfections where the preparation work could have been better. At the same time, this makes it easier to use the car without worry. Most of the chrome is in good condition, and much of it is new — see photos. The soft top appears to be in good condition, though somewhat “tight” as it has rarely been used. A hardtop is included separately — see photos.

  • General condition:

An MGB in usable condition. The car has scope for improvement, making it a good project for someone looking for a running example. It presents well, but please study the photos carefully to assess its potential.

Facts about the model

In the late 1950s, the project was launched to create the MGB as the successor to the MGA. In September 1962, the new roadster was unveiled and was well received by both the motoring press and buyers. The 1798 cc engine with twin SU carburettors offered strong performance. The gearbox was a four-speed, but for a modest extra cost, buyers could opt for an electric overdrive.

From 1965, technical improvements included a five-bearing crankshaft, an oil cooler as standard, and an electric tachometer. Two years later, a six-cylinder engine was fitted into the small car, available in both open and closed versions. For the 1970 model year, the radiator was redesigned, and Rostyle aluminium wheels replaced steel rims. Wire wheels, as always, could be ordered throughout the production run. The model also saw the fitment of a Rover V8 engine.

Production lasted until 1981. Later variants were built, and it is still possible today to essentially assemble a brand-new example, with everything from newly manufactured bodies to parts both large and small readily available. This is a beloved and cherished model that never goes out of style.
