Volkswagen T2 Pick-Up Baywindow 1600 — 1972

A very nice T2 pick-up with the wide Westfalia flatbed. It has had four owners, driven only about 90,000 kilometers, and is in very good condition.

"A rare VW Pick-Up in fantastic condition. A Baywindow eyecatcher that draws attention in any setting."

Description

Only four previous owners. The first owner had the vehicle for 20 years, until 1992. The second owner was the toy wholesaler Robetoy, who used the pickup for exhibitions and trade shows between 1992 and 2018. It was then sold to the famous VW museum in Pålsboda.

The vehicle is entirely in its original condition. The paint, interior, engine, and all details are untouched and still in excellent shape, despite having been a work vehicle. The car has been kept indoors by all its owners, which is why it has remained in such good condition. There is some surface rust around stone chips and small marks, but nothing serious. It's even clean and rust-free inside the side compartment, directly under the flatbed (see pictures), which is rare. A fun detail is that it has been equipped with the accessory flatbed from Westfalia since new, featuring a wooden bed, wooden side panels, canopy, and wider mirrors. This flatbed has been completely renovated and is in fantastic condition. The flatbed provided a longer and wider loading area. The canopy was replaced about 10 years ago.

The wheels have been newly painted with new tires. New roof rack. New headlights and bezels. Partially renovated brakes, though they require a final adjustment.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The engine is completely original and has only undergone a start-up renovation with new electrical wires, hoses, spark plugs, and more. The engine starts very easily, and the gears shift smoothly. It’s a very fun car to drive.

  • Interior condition:

In the "cab," everything is in great condition. The carpets, dashboard, door panels, and other upholstery are all well-preserved. However, the driver's seat is sun-bleached (see video).

  • Exterior condition:

The exterior is in excellent condition, showing only traces of careful use over the years. There are no damages or significant rust issues. There are small surface rust spots near the entry points (front fenders) on both sides. However, these signs of use do not detract from the overall impressive appearance.

  • General condition:

A very strong overall impression. It’s been a long time since we’ve seen such a well-preserved original Pick-up. Carefully enhanced with a sense of appreciation and respect for this historic vehicle model.

Facts about the model

The Type 2 is commonly referred to as the bus, and it's the transport model that followed the Beetle (Type 1). The first model of the Type 2, with a split windshield, is known as the T1 and was produced until 1967. In 1968, a modernized version was introduced, featuring a single-piece windshield, and it was called the T2, which was manufactured until 1981 (and until 2012 in Brazil).

The T2 has a slightly more powerful engine, better brakes, and a roomier driver's area, but otherwise, it is quite similar to the T1. Easy to drive, practical, and durable, these vehicles were used for a long time by various tradespeople. As a result, very few remain today, and even fewer are left that haven't been worn out (or repaired multiple times). This makes this pickup a rarity in the VW world, considering its very good condition and low mileage.
