"Show-quality condition - and attracts a lot of attention."

Description

Sold new in Sweden, registered in April 1937. Chevrolet didn't produce many large open four-door cars at that time. The Imperial model was specifically designed for Europe, featuring a body by Gläser in Germany. The car was likely assembled in Stockholm. A total of 123 of these bodies are believed to have been delivered. A change of ownership is recorded in 1951 when the car was located in Älmhult. The next trace of it appears in the 1970s when it ended up in Denmark. It was brought back to Sweden, and the sad remnants of the impressive car began to undergo restoration in 2005. Initially restored to its original state, it was then modified into a lowrider with a Corvette engine. The car comes with documentation and a specially crafted photo book detailing the entire restoration process from 2005 to 2009.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The restoration work has been executed very finely, with much of the wooden frame being new and a high standard of sheet metal replacement. Subsequently, the car was modified in several aspects. Up front, it has a Ford Mustang front axle, and a similar one from a Volvo 740 at the rear. An air suspension system with Firestone airbags, measuring 2600 at the rear and 2500 at the front, was installed. The car features disc brakes all around, with a master cylinder from a Nissan Micra. Recently, a front wheel bearing was replaced, and the air suspension compressor underwent maintenance with new water separators. The car runs on a modern 12V electrical system. Powering it is a Chevrolet LS-1 Corvette engine and an automatic transmission, both from the 2002 model year. All mechanical and pneumatic components are in excellent condition. The car has passed inspection and received approval for the last time. However, it is not registered with the engine and air suspension.

  • Interior condition:

The leather upholstery has been meticulously recreated to match the original design, showcasing superb craftsmanship and being in perfect condition. Carpets and other panels are in excellent shape. The original instruments have been replaced with a digital unit, and the floor-mounted record player conceals a modern CD player.

  • Exterior condition:

The sheet metal and paintwork exhibit the highest possible level of finish. The color is a Saab shade known as Green Silver Mica. The pinstriping, accented with inlaid gold leaf and intricate motifs, has been executed with professional skill, boasting an award-winning standard. The convertible top is in excellent condition, rarely used, and displays exceptional precision and fit.

  • General condition:

In an extremely excellent condition and highly functional car. The air suspension adds to the comfort, but the primary purpose of the car is to be noticed. And it certainly achieves that. This car garners significant attention wherever it goes and has won several prestigious awards at exhibitions.

Facts about the model

General Motors had a series of assembly plants in Europe during this time, including Rotterdam, Biel, and Stockholm. The name Imperial was used for Chevrolet here in 1935-36. It referred to the slightly longer chassis in the Master series, which was sometimes used for special bodies, taxi use, and the like. When the cars came to Europe, they were shipped in pieces to be assembled locally. Whether this particular car arrived as a chassis or a complete vehicle initially is unknown, but it's most likely that it was built at the Stockholm factory.

Gläser was a coachbuilder in Dresden and was founded by Carl-Heinrich Gläser in 1864. Initially, they made interiors for carriages and later whole carriages. In 1905, they began producing bodies for automobiles. They crafted cabriolet bodies for brands like Horch, Mercedes, Wanderer, and more. They didn't always build entire cars on-site; instead, they supplied body parts to the factories that assembled the cars. This includes the Chevrolet Imperial phaetons as well. According to some sources, a total of 123 of these carriages were made in 1935-36, and today only a handful remain preserved.
