"An uncommon sight on today’s roads—hailing from a time when diesel engines were mostly found in work vehicles not built for speed. Performed well during the test drive, with some black smoke under heavy acceleration, but still manageable. A timing belt replacement is urgently recommended for safety, as there is no record of the last change, and a failure could result in serious engine damage."

Description

This pickup was originally sold new in the Netherlands. In 2018, it came along as part of a household move when a Dutch family relocated to northern Värmland, Sweden. After the move, it was left untouched in storage for several years. In 2025, a young man spotted it while purchasing a motorcycle from the family—resulting in a deal for both the bike and the pickup. On May 30, 2025, the vehicle was registered in the Swedish vehicle registry and passed inspection. It is approved for road use until May 31, 2027.

During the test drive, it was noted that the odometer is not functioning. Therefore, total mileage cannot be guaranteed. However, judging by the condition of the interior and other visible signs, it does not appear to have significantly high mileage. The pickup comes with a jack, spare wheel, and one set of keys.

Since the timing belt needs replacing, this could be a good opportunity for the new owner to carry out an underbody rust protection treatment at the same time.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Equipped with a 1.6-liter turbodiesel engine and a 4-speed manual transmission. Starts easily after pre-glow and runs smoothly in both engine and gearbox. The long gear lever requires some adjustment for drivers used to modern cars, as the shift throws are notably longer. Despite being an older diesel with just 50 horsepower, the engine feels surprisingly strong—likely thanks to the turbocharger.

The vehicle passed inspection on May 30, 2025, with a “good to know” note regarding black smoke. According to the owner, this has gradually decreased as the vehicle has been brought back into regular use, after having stood unused between 2018 and 2025. The engine oil and filter have been changed, but the timing belt urgently needs to be replaced, as there is no record of a previous change.

  • Interior condition:

Surprisingly clean interior—well above expectations for a utility vehicle. The headliner is in good condition, and the seats are nicely preserved. Unfortunately, the odometer is not working, but the speedometer and other features such as the cabin fan, wipers, and washer functioned properly during the test drive.

  • Exterior condition:

The vehicle still appears to wear its original paint. There are signs of wear, touch-ups, and visible repairs. Some surface rust is present, including a hole on the side of the cargo bed—see photos for details. Despite this, it has held up relatively well against rust and features a charming patina that could be worth preserving. The underside shows surface rust that would benefit from rustproofing or an oil treatment.

It’s fitted with commercial-grade (C-type) tires, which have good tread but show some signs of dry cracking. The access hatches to the storage compartments beneath the bed need attention—one of them is currently jammed shut. Judging by the data plate, the flatbed appears to have been manufactured by Westfalia-Werke.

  • General condition:

The word robust fits this nostalgic workhorse perfectly. Just as capable of hauling lumber as it is turning heads at the local car meet.
