"A worn but unique Volkswagen that, with the right owner, can be restored to its original condition."

Description

The car has been in Hoting since new and has only three recorded owners. It is equipped with a textile sunroof and features the small oval rear window that appeared in 1953. Notable characteristics of these model years include the non-synchronized first gear in the four-speed gearbox and the single exhaust pipe.

The car is fully drivable and was last inspected in 2009. It needs a general refresh or a restoration to return it to its original condition. It has fared well against rust, but some damage to the floor and running boards needs attention. There is also rust under the battery tray.

The brakes work excellently, and the engine runs well. The engine was replaced sometime in the 1960s with a more modern 1200 engine producing 30 hp, but the original engine comes with the purchase. The wheels are original, having been sandblasted and painted. The hubcaps are of the original type. A special toolbox located near the spare tire is included, although the tools are missing.

The car has great potential for being restored and used at car meets or simply for driving around. As a curious addition, an old camping set that has been in the car for a long time is included, as shown in the picture.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The engine has been replaced and works excellently, and the original engine is included. The gearbox is also in good condition and is likely the original one with the non-synchronized first gear. The electrical system and brakes are in good working order. The fuel tank is newly renovated and in great condition, featuring the typical large cap with the emblem. The exhaust system is leak-free. The window regulators work properly.

  • Interior condition:

The interior is original, but the door panels have been covered with vinyl, and the old fabric interior remains underneath, though the vinyl is very worn. The seats may have been replaced a long time ago. The dashboard is intact, as is the steering wheel, which is of a later date. An older steering wheel is included with the purchase. The few controls that exist are functional, and the start button is located on the far left next to the steering wheel. Surface rust is present under the worn floor mats. The interior roof is dominated by the large sunroof, which is in poor condition. The roof around the sunroof is intact. Even the accessory for improving visibility on cold winter days is included; it's a plastic panel that was supposed to be attached to the corner of the windshield to direct air towards a side window. See the photo.

  • Exterior condition:

The paint is worn and was repainted in the 1960s in a blue shade similar to the original metallic blue paint, traces of which can be seen under the hood. The sunroof is very worn and needs replacement. The running boards are rusted, but brand-new ones are included with the purchase. The rear hatch has two holes covered by plates, likely where a large "S" emblem was mounted. A complete rear hatch is included with the purchase. There are no visible damage from collisions, and the fit of the doors and the front and rear hatches is good. Currently, there is a simple, square exhaust pipe as per the original, but at some point, the car had dual pipes, so there are cutouts in the rear panel for two pipes.

The old semaphore turn signals on the door pillars are operational, but more modern blinkers have also been installed; the original-style semaphores remain and can be included with the purchase. One bumper horn is missing but is included separately. The original taillights are intact with the brake lights on top. See the photo. The unique sunroof is also completely original with right-angled corners.

  • General condition:

A solid Volkswagen with the potential to become truly exceptional once again.
