Description

After a short period as a demo car at Jeppssons Bil AB in Ronneby, the current owner's wife's uncle purchased the car in February 1961. He drove the car throughout the 1960s and the early 1970s for over 120 000 km. By then, it was well-used and was stored away. The current owner acquired the car in 1974 and began an ambitious and thorough restoration in 1980. By 1988, it was completed and in the same exemplary exhibition condition it is in today. Over the past 35 years, the owner has driven just over 30 000 km and has taken excellent care of the car. It is polished, complete, clean, and shiny everywhere; underneath, inside, in the engine compartment, and in the trunk. He performed the restoration himself during those 8 years, only outsourcing the painting. Even the lead soldering of the body joints is a craft he mastered. The most recent and final inspection was done on July 5, 2017.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The engine starts immediately and produces that distinctively fresh metallic sound that only an older Volkswagen boxer engine in exceptionally good condition can make. It is the original engine that remains in the car, and it doesn't consume any oil. The cylinder heads has been taken off and fitted with new valve guides and grinded valves; otherwise, the engine is believed to be untouched. The engine compartment still looks better than new after over 30 000 km and 35 years. The brakes and chassis are in the same class, lively and efficient according to the standards of the time.

  • Interior condition:

The interior is actually completely original; seats, carpets, door panels, and headliner. The first owner had protective covers on throughout their ownership. However, the handbrake gaiter and gear lever gaiter in black rubber have been replaced; they should be beige, but only black ones were available at the time of completion. Perhaps they are now available in the correct beige shade as new reproductions.

  • Exterior condition:

The 35-year-old paint is beautiful and well-maintained, although the owner points out a barely noticeable irregularity in the lead filler between the right front fender and the front. It is equipped with older Firestone crossply tires with good tread and white sidewalls on meticulously original painted wheels in light green with a black edge and chrome-plated hubcaps and trim rings.

  • General condition:

An unusually well-restored and well-maintained representative of the model. Paint, chrome, interior, and details, everything is in exemplary condition.

Facts about the model

Already in 1953, the first prototype of a GT car on the VW Type 1 chassis was built by Carozzeria Ghia in Turin. It is said that German Karmann had tried to get Volkswagen interested in a special car but without success. When Ghia, with its trendy Italian design, presented its proposal, Volkswagen jumped at the opportunity. This led to a three-part collaboration between Ghia, Karmann, and VW, and in June 1955, production began at Karmann's facility in Osnabrück. Since the mechanics were the same as in the VW Type 1, it was not a true sports car and had modest performance. However, its design was then and still is considered stylish and elegant. In 1957, a convertible version was launched. For the 1960 model year, there were changes to meet American market requirements; larger air intakes in the front, the headlights moved up a notch, and the taillights and wheel arches became larger. The interior became a bit airier with the addition of opening side rear windows. Over the years, the body design did not change significantly, with only minor corrections, as the basic concept remained consistent from the beginning. Mechanically, it followed the developments of the VW Type 1 throughout the years. Production ceased in 1973 after 364,401 coupe versions were built.
