"This Saab 96 is in a complete, well-functioning, and pleasant condition. There are some damages, but it is a good and honest car."

Description

A car that lived a relatively calm life. Few miles and few owners, actually only three users throughout the years. First user from autumn 1977 to winter 1995, User two until spring 2015, and user three until spring 2021. The current owner has driven it sparingly. However, he has replaced the exhaust system, the slave cylinder, and fixed the brakes.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The car was a bit difficult to start during the inspection and had an uneven idle, but after a while, it improved and ran smoothly during the test drive. Gear shifts were smooth, and the brakes worked well. Most likely, the car needs to be driven more as it has mostly been stationary in recent years. A much-needed thorough inspection and servicing will be beneficial. Vital parts and the undercarriage appear to be in good condition. Not checked on a lift. There is some play in the wiper controls.

  • Interior condition:

There is mild wear and some dirt, but overall, the interior is well-maintained and original, with nice seats, door panels, carpets, and headliner, including the dashboard. There are also rubber protective mats from SAAB. The vintage Philips radio is in working condition.

  • Exterior condition:

The paintwork is in good condition, but there are damages and rust in various places. It also appears that one of the fenders might have been replaced and repainted. Rubber details and hubcaps are in good condition. The lamp glasses are in slightly varying conditions. The wheels have some dots in the paint and minor scrapes. The Firestone tires are good, although they have been used for a while. The engine and luggage compartments are in good condition.

  • General condition:

There are both technical and cosmetic details that need to be addressed, but fundamentally, it is an "untouched vehicle" in its original state, with all the potential to become a beautiful, user-friendly, and enjoyable classic car.

Facts about the model

The automotive division of SAAB was established in 1947, and the first model, the Saab 92, borrowed some design elements from their aviation operations. As the model 92 evolved through various stages, it became the model 96 from the 1960 model year. The Saab 96 retained some design elements from the 1940s while also embracing the trends of the 1960s. When SAAB introduced the new 99 and later the 900, many believed that the 96 would be phased out. However, like the mythical Phoenix, the 96 received updates over the years and persisted into the 1980s.

Over time, significant and minor changes occurred, so that when production eventually ended, comparing an early 92 with an 80s model revealed that almost nothing remained the same, yet there was still a clear family resemblance.

For the 1978 models, the designation "Saab 96 GL" was introduced, featuring larger front parking and turn signal lights. The taillights were also made larger and now included built-in reverse lights. The rear hatch received a spoiler-like handle. Towards the end of the 1977 model year, the 96 received a new two-stage carburetor, increasing the power output to 68 hp, which was reflected in the 1978 model, labeled as the "V4 Super" on the rear hatch. New colors for that year included Jadegreen. According to reports, 547,221 units of the Saab 96 were manufactured.
