"The car runs well and benefits from an older restoration that has remained in excellent condition. It is great fun to drive and produces a pleasing exhaust note."

Description

This Volkswagen Cabriolet was purchased by its current owner through Bilweb Auctions in 2021. Since then, it has been driven sparingly during the summer months and maintained with the necessary servicing. This is how the car was described in our advertisement at the time:

The car was purchased by its previous owner while attending a large Volkswagen meeting in Nevada in 2014 and was brought to Sweden in 2015. In the USA, it had been owned by a Volkswagen enthusiast who restored it during the 1990s and upgraded the engine and chassis to provide a more enjoyable driving experience.

The car is fitted with a 1,845 cc engine featuring twin Weber IDA 40 carburettors, together with an additional oil cooler and filter; please see the photographs. According to information from the previous owner, the engine was built by the well-known Volkswagen drag-racing engine builder Jim Behrens, using parts from EMPI and Race-Trim. Its output is estimated at approximately 130–140 hp.

The car has undergone a Swedish registration inspection with the larger engine installed and has now passed its final periodic inspection with the Swedish vehicle inspection authority. To cope with the increased power, the gearbox and gearbox mountings have been reinforced. The brakes are sourced from a Volkswagen Type 3, while the rear suspension has been upgraded to the independent rear suspension system used on later models, providing significantly improved handling.

The car was originally built as a show car, which is why the floorpan was painted red and certain components were chromed or anodised. Although this work was carried out around 25 years ago, the car remains in excellent condition and drives beautifully. It is genuinely enjoyable to drive and attractive to look at.

The engine alone reportedly cost more than USD 10,000 at the time. This is an excellent opportunity for anyone looking for a fun Volkswagen Cabriolet that stands out without being overly modified.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The car starts easily and runs well. The powerful engine revs quickly under acceleration and delivers strong performance, so the car should be driven with a certain degree of caution. It has been converted to a 12-volt electrical system, and everything works as it should. The front luggage compartment can be locked from inside using a key.

  • Interior condition

The reupholstered interior is in good condition, showing only a few minor signs of use.

  • Exterior condition

The bodywork is straight and in good condition. The car has reportedly never been involved in an accident or suffered from rust or other damage. The white paintwork is in well-maintained condition for its age, with a few areas of touch-up and some cracks above the exhaust pipes; please see the photographs. The convertible top is complete and in good condition. Externally, the car retains its original appearance.

  • General condition

A delightful Volkswagen Cabriolet that runs well and offers plenty of driving enjoyment.

Facts about the model

Today, the Volkswagen Cabriolet is a sought-after collector’s car. Thanks to Karmann’s high build quality, its timeless design and the enjoyment of open-top motoring, the model is regarded as one of the most desirable classic Volkswagens. Well-preserved or professionally restored examples are considerably rarer than their saloon counterparts and therefore often command higher prices on the classic car market.
