"A good, solid 75-year-old Opel with an older renovation that still presents well. Recently got a start up service after little use in recent years, it is now back up and running."

Description

This Opel was sold new in Sweden and was re-registered in 1977 after being removed from the vehicle register. Since then, it has had just three long-term owners.

The current owner, who sadly passed away, was a lifelong mechanic and purchased the car around eight years ago. During his ownership, he carried out an older restoration, including bodywork repairs, a high-quality repaint, and extensive rechroming. The interior was also refurbished and remains in very presentable condition today, reflecting the care and attention the car has received over the years.

The car has seen very little use in recent years. We have carried out a brief mechanical review, and it is now running and driving. After standing for a day or two, it benefits from a small amount of starting spray before firing.

There is a minor fuel leak from the fuel pump or its gasket, and the engine has a noise believed to originate from the water pump. However, the engine maintains a normal operating temperature and shows no signs of coolant leaks or overheating..

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Starts easily once warm, while from cold it benefits from a couple of sprays of starting fluid before firing up. The engine runs well, although there is a noise believed to be coming from the water pump. On the road, it drives nicely with a smooth column gearshift, and the brakes work well, although the brake pedal drops and needs to be lifted back with your foot after use.

There is a small fuel leak from the fuel pump or its gasket. The car is driveable but would benefit from a general mechanical review and an engine oil service before regular use. It is inspection exempt and sits on a good set of wheels with older, usable tyres.

  • Interior condition

Interior presents well and has clearly benefited from an older renovation seats, door cards and headlining have been reupholstered and remain in good, usable condition. The original dashboard is complete and retains its factory gauges and instrumentation. The owner has fitted an additional push rod to make operating the floor-mounted starter button easier; while functional, it is not original and could easily be removed if preferred.

  • Exterior condition

Presentable car with generally straight bodywork. There is a small dent and scrape on the left rear wing, while the remaining panels are straight with no obvious rust concerns. The underbody appears solid, showing signs of older welding repairs consistent with the car's age.

The lower sills have been finished in grey bedliner paint rather than the original chrome trim, and there is some light rust visible on the inner edges of the front wings. The chrome work is bright and presentable overall, although the door handles show some oxidation and light pitting. The rear window frame has some surface rust, and the window seals are older and show signs of wear.

  • General condition

A good-looking and solid Opel with a smart interior and bright chrome work. It will need a general mechanical review and service before regular use, after which it should make an enjoyable classic.
